Trolling idiots is fun
"Is it just me or does the Martian look dumb... how does he live on mars for so long."

I... I can't.  Comprehend.  wat

I genuinely want Brendan to have been a real person. The sheer amazingness of the thing would be magnified by it.

Heiterverzweiflung. Not a legit German word so much as something a friend and I made up in German class once. "Carefree despair". When life is so fucked that you can't stop laughing.

There are really real people like that. It's probably real.

Its just like... its a movie.  Even if you don't know how NASA do, are you sitting at the MCU movies like "how does Iron Man stay in the air for so long?"

But how can you live on Mars when sound can't travel through a vacuum?

I like how Rob didn't even bother to mention that Mars does indeed have an atmosphere

Tides go in, tides go out, you can't explain that!

Simple. Unclog the vacuum so sound can travel through it again.

It's enough to make parachutes Do Something, though. Which means sound can travel through it, I wager.

Exactly. Useless, but audible. Until your ears erupt in blood.

Basically, you would need a space suit to keep you pressurized/breathing, and to provide radiation shielding. Sounds would be audible, but likely fairly quiet, or unlikely to carry as far. The speed of sound is also probably higher.

The speed of sound is actually slower, because in ideal gases variables cancel out to make it basically only dependent on temperature (and even for non-ideal gases the relationship is lower density = slower speed of sound, which is why the speed of sound is like 4x as fast in water as in air). That said the temperature and few other effects on Mars are still enough to drop the speed of sound all of the way down to 240 m/s from our 340 m/s, a huge drop! Note wise the effective change of this and the thinner atmosphere results in a net effective frequency of around 74% of what you would normally have, meaning that your voice (and anything else) comes out around 2-3 whole steps lower than what it would be at normally.

Volume wise there is also going to a be some fairly large drops there as well, since the formula for sound intensity is directly correlated to both the speed of sound in a given medium and it's density, you're going to end up with a double whammy for making sounds quieter (though it would be much easier for you to have supersonic shockwaves blasting out of any explosives you set off, resulting in a fair bit more punch from them than you would get on earth).

Yay, somebody who knows about this stuff! I'm mostly running off guesswork and the more scientific books I've read. Thanks!

We are doomed. It's just that whatever is going to kill us all just happens to be, from a scientific standpoint, pretty frickin' awesome.
