i just saw MANOS: Hand of Fate. My God. I knew it was supposed to be bad but still, this movie suprised me. MANOS is just that sort of movie that makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about bad movies.

After that i watched the 1980s Sci Fi movie Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone. Which i was also expecting to be pretty bad. However, it was pleasantly surprised. It holds up especially well for a 35 year old schlocky sci-fi movie, and would be a definite recommend if you want to zone out for 90 minute with a schlocky Mad Max / Star Wars rip off. Plus going straight from Manos to Spacehunter ... it was like another world. Pro-tip: to appreciate average movies more, watch MANOS right before them.

As for Spacehunter: The action, effects, writing, acting are all pretty solid, the production is excellent, the villain is super creepy. Reviews panned it at the time, but mainly by referencing how the recently-released Return of the Jedi was much better. However. it's not necessarily a fair comparison. And it has a cute teenaged Molly Ringwald in it. Star Wars had zero Molly Ringwalds.

Not sure about the other movie Reeyla mentioned, but Manos: The Hands of Fate is available for watching and download on the wikipedia page and probably on youtube as well.

Excuse me but there is no indisputable king of classic god-awful sci-fi movies except for FLASH. AHH-AHHHHH.

Like, I can accept that that's a pretty great example, and a shining standard to look up to, but it's kinda cheating with its production values. I'm still fairly partial to the stone-age barbarian who shoots a giant bat out of the sky, punches the rigor mortis into it, and then uses it as a hang glider while his theme song plays.

If you've ever thought to yourself "Y'know, Conan was pretty neat, but why didn't he ever infiltrate the death star and drive around in a bumper car?", then Yor, the Hunter from the Future is the movie for you.

I will agree that Yor is a fine example.

Didn't we used to have a movie thread specifically for appreciating classics like these? I thought I remembered something like that...

I've been watching old Mystery Science Theater episodes on youtube (upoaded by various people).  Red Letter Media's "Best Of The Worst" series is also mostly old cheesy movies, though they mostly just show highlights and discuss.

I thought Flash Gordon was a linebacker in the movie. Ah well.

Also, George Lucas tried to get the rights to make a Flash Gordon movie, but ended up making Star Wars instead.

The Norwegian translation of X-Files episode synopses is not exactly of the highest quality... Aside from the occasional typo or grammatical anomaly, it also sometimes accidentally a word.

(Translated back into English) "Agent Mulder believes an African spirit may be the culprit behind a number of dark-skinned individuals in Philadelphia"

I mean, at first I thought it was a mistake, but considering black people existing in Philly is a pretty damn mysterious event in and of itself, it probably warrants investigation anyways.

Scandinavian translations have always been a little off at best.
Being a Swede whom have been living in Denmark for a few years, I should know.

Edit: And don't get me started on Scandinavian dubs, which is a pet peeve of mine.

How does one watch old obscure movies?

I get them from the pirate bay. However that might be bad advice depending on the laws of the land.

some old movies are simply on youtube or dailymotion for free if they're not worth the effort of the rights holder to enforce.

It's much easier with anime, which is like the wild west compared to trying to stream English-language movies and TV. I think that's one reason anime is getting so popular with younger people. It's much less effort to get it than to illegally get Western shows.
