Wait, did she get this bored while you were talking to her?! If so, you might need some better banter. :P

Dang it, I was going to say that but couldn't figure how to word it.

A gal I'm talking to got so bored today she tried to measure a tree's age.

She cut down a tree because she was bored?
you don’t need to cut down a tree to get the data needed, just take a small chunk that reaches to the center of the tree, I think this is called coring it, the rest of the tree is still there. I will attempt an illustration at what I’m talking about because I suck at explaining things.
The image below is from a website and will be used at the base of the thing I’m talking about

Take the core of the tree, a small piece of it that reaches to the center of it and thus contains the xylem that is used for the layers

You will still be able to measure tree age, without cutting down the entire tree

Practiced this for a geology class. It will wear out your hands twisting the core drill in there, it's easy to miss the exact core, and your sample could get broken. But core drilling has no long term effects on the tree that natural predators like insect larvae or that damn bird pictured above wouldnt.

Reminds me, a couple years ago there was a wicked wind storm during February with like 50 mph linear gusts. Broke one of the decorative parking lot trees outside a feed and garden store in half. Not a big tree or anything, 6 inches in diameter, and it was deciduous. I was thinking, the tree was dormant, the break wasn't real nasty like bark stripped off, they had lots of necessary tools there... I would have just grafted it back together, it would probably lose a few branches but survive. They replaced it with a new sapling.

The easy solution, the safe solution, but testing no boundaries whatsoever. Lame.

Not a big tree or anything, 6 inches in diameter, and it was delicious.

This is why I need to not look at the boards immediately after waking up.

I just had a thing where I had a momentary flash of some game (not even long enough to have a coherent image) I was playing and I thought "oh what was that game again?" but then immediately thought "hold on, I haven't been playing any games recently, what the hell was that a memory of?"

Then I realized I started watching through the Resident Evil movies recently (only ever saw a couple of them), so that must have been it. Those movies are so much like video games, even though they're actually nothing like the Resident Evil video games funnily enough, that I had some momentary flash of the movie (the second one) and my brain immediately classified that flash as "playing a video game".

Measure the width about 1 metre from bottom and then divide by 2.5.

Is how it's done, apparently. She doesn't think it is accurate though. I can see why  ;)

According to the internet the clams advise the staff to test the water. So yes.

Quote from: twitter
Well I did some research and it's mostly true. The pic is from 2019 Polish documentary Fat Kathy. This article (in PL) https://mpwik.com.pl/view/malze-i-ryby-testerami-wody&i=678 says clams don't shut water off immediately but signal the station's staff to test the water

I got a small fright in a game I was playing (Dishonored, there were two enemies behind a door which did not have two enemies behind it when it was closed a few seconds before) and that evidently gave my wife a fright, as she was playing a game in the other room.

Also rolling dice in acid, which I’m pretty sure I posted in this thread the last time I read through the comic, is very funny.
