Dwarven Siege?
« on: July 08, 2014, 07:48:43 pm »

Winter arrives and shortly after that a siege arrives, I only have 13 dwarves, I look over, and they're all dwarves as well. Does anyone know why this might happen? The outpost liason hasn't left from the previous year yet, even though he met with my broker.

I didn't slaughter the merchants, even though that looks like blood at the depot. Some buzzards got in and my dogs dealt with them.

Unit list view.

Images didn't want to upload, so I included the links instead.

EDIT: Yeah, they're definitely acting like humans, but I haven't modded the game at all, and it hasn't caused a loyalty cascade.

Went through legends mode after the fortress fell, and I looked up the dwarves, they were all members of a civilization that appointed a goblin mayor. http://imgur.com/WEOMpMI

Looked at the goblin himself, and he's a member of the civilization that I was apart of, and I got attacked by them. Huh. http://imgur.com/cD5J6eS

Sounds like thats either an army passing through, or your civ has some disagreements on how things should be done with whatever civ the invaders are from.

Check the [c]ivilizations screen to see what it shows for them.

Doesn't have any info on them, but I think they're firing at my dwarves. I spotted a few crossbow bolts on the floor and they're just idling around at the corner. Perhaps a group of bandits?

Well, that's odd. As far as I understand there can't be wars between same species (I mean Dwarves vs. Dwarves).

If this is, in fact, a new update from the new version, then this is awesome!  :D

May be the attackers are from a different Dwarven civilization you're at war with. Check in the Civilization screen if there are other Civs in there and what are your "Export/Import" agreement. Usually with Goblins it says they import Terror and you export Vengeance to them.

Maybe goblin snatchers were so succesful they became extinct, and kidnapped dwarves now rule the goblin civilization?

Yeah, only my home civilization pops up there but they're not part of it. the trade agreement thing says
Exports from Enamtekkud 160
Imports from Enamtekkud 160
Really no idea what's going on. They're moving closer to my fort but looks like they keep backing off when one of my fishers come out. I'll try and make someone a military dwarf and station them next to them.

Edit: They're defiantly firing at my dwarf  http://imgur.com/SZKAuUX    I'm guessing either a group of bandits or like Martinuzz said, some snatched dwarves acting upon the goblins or something.

I see.

According to a v0.34 article about Sieges (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.34:Siege), dwarves lay sieges the same way that humans do.

That is, setting a camp near the end of the edge of the map, attacking passing dwarves, and expecting you to come to attack them instead of the other way around.

It look like it still works the same way. That's why they attack you like that. :P

I don't know. I'm under the impression that if they would have belonged to a goblin civ, they would have attacked the goblin way.  That is charging directly at your fortress.

Anyway, keep posting what happens. This is indeed interesting. :)

We're going to fight them head on because they just keep taking potshots at my dwarves and they get bolts stuck in them. Trying to train my dogs, but I keep getting this message when I do. http://imgur.com/SexGLmV  No matter, we don't need dogs.

To battle! http://imgur.com/UYUTHx0

When we got their numbers down to the last one, the siege notification got removed, but he kept running at my dwarves and fighting. He killed everyone save one half dead dwarf stuck high in a huge tree. RIP http://imgur.com/FQyhF1k

Maybe its just goblins who snatched so many dwarves they can send a whole siege of them? ;) I know in this dwarven home I started in they've got a goblin per every ten dwarves or so :O This world was genned under the bug where necro towers and goblin sites (all sites??) can spread like wildfire, so over half the (medium island) sized map is totally covered in goblin sites.. These dwarves held their own in that sea of gobs, and it looks like they did it by reinforcing their dwarfly numbers with goblins :>

On another note, I don't see many dwarves here but its taking me.. 5 minutes??.. to move a single step (DF is "Not Responding" til it finally moves.. Don't think this site is THAT flooded with entities either..)
