Playing at 1920x1080, need bigger tiles.
« on: July 09, 2014, 04:06:51 am »

Hello,

I have a bad eyes. I want to play the game when my Windows resolution is set to 1920x1080 and I want to use a graphical tileset. I have very very limited understanding of the hardcoded restrictions of the tilesets. I know that that there mainly are 16x16 tileset and some 24x24. Would a 24x24 help me see things compared to 16x16?

Are there any complete 24x24 tilesets that include monsters, items etc? I have tried to Google and search this forum to no avail.

Any other suggestions how to increase the size of the tiles and also text?

If there's any restrictions, it's the minimum width of 80 tiles - 24x24 is the maximum that fits juuuust right into your resolution.

I have more doubts about the graphics bit, though. Most of the graphical tilesets are designed around some older 16x16 font or such. Even then, there's pretty heavy limitations on what you can afford to replace with glyphs and not make ordinary text illegible. Without DFHack help, only creature tiles can have custom sprites. Everything else must draw from that one pink-backed .png.

In any case, here's a pretty snazzy 24x24 version of the basic ASCII. You can see those until you find something more fitting. Here's a good place to start looking.

I use 24x24 tiles also, I use a program I found here called Tileset Resizer by arclance and resize whatever tileset I am using at the time.  So if you are a DIY kind of person there's a good tool for you.  Getting all the programs together, figuring out the command lines and getting the correct TILE_DIM info for each sprite sheet is somewhat complicated.

You could also just resize all the tileset images in an image viewer, but they might look awful after resizing, I don't know.  Tileset Resizer cuts the image up into individual tiles and does an HQX (or other) resize, and stitches them back together again.  So they look great.  But it takes a lot more effort, figuring out the commands to use and then processing time.

At what resolution is a larger tileset helpful? I myself play at 1280x1024....

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

My monitor is 2560x1600.  I've been toying around with the idea of making a larger tileset myself.

I've used that as a base and edited the dwarves to properly upscale the beards from the smaller tilesets (at least in my eyes). It's what I use. Here:

Forgot to mention, you can also just zoom in (mousewheel-down by default).  I don't know that resizing the tiles is better than just zooming.  The tiles might be a bit higher quality, if the resize method is better than DF's zoom.  Zooming looks pretty good to me though, I don't think it's a big difference.

Thank for everyone for the replies. If someone have resized any of the current graphical tilsets with tileset resizer and would like to share it I would gladly welcome a download link to it :)

Also the built in zoom mode doesn't zoom close enough for me. It's still way too small.

Here are the tilesets I have in 24x24, these are for DF version 34.11.  I'll do some for version 40.0x and edit this post with the links when they are up.

[24x24] Spacefox tileset for 34.11
[24x24] Phoebus tileset for 34.11
[24x24] Phoebus tileset for 40.02

You could set scaling to nearest, use some tileset you like and scale up ingame. Not optimal but should do the trick.
Gives a more oldschooly look.

Prior to making my 24x24 tileset I have created a 32x32 tileset (also no shade). You might want to give it a shot on 2560x1600

You might want to check out Mephs 24x24 item tiles, too, for use with Text will be Text. You could use one of the 24x24 ASCII sets, of even a smaller one for text, and still use a graphical one for the main game.

I am currently working on making a 20px Tileset, from scratch, and attempting to make the sprites crisp and clean (similar to spacefox, but more detailed).

I started with 24px, but in general 20px was much easier to draw sprites for (although sometime I wish I had those extra 176 pixels) and will fit more monitor resolutions.

Drawing a tile set from scratch is tedious.  I get like one tile done a day (because I work and am a perfectionist).  Currently about half way done, though some changes need to be made thanks to the new release.

[24x24] Phoebus tileset for 40.02

Any requests, let me know.  Spacefox is still in flux so I'll do that when it's finished.

As far as the original question, unless you're at a resolution higher than 1920x1080 these won't help.  DF requires 80 columns of width so 24x24 is the largest you can go (you can't zoom either since it's at the maximum already.)  The author of Text will be Text is removing that restriction with his plugin, I think it's still in development though and I haven't tried it yet.  Once that's done there will probably be more work on larger tilesets.
