Guess we just need to make our underground tree farms a little bit deeper. Should have done from the start so they have much more room to grow making it more efficient than a piddly 3z space.

I am surprised there is no Gurren Lagann joke yet in this thread.

Anyways, I would just wall off some cavern part and use it as a tree farm.

The problem lies not so much with tree farms, as with soil levels in general. As soon as you breach the first cavern, expect your soil levels to be riddled with holes by trees.

Vanilla DF. Only thing I did was repair quarry bushes to give seeds upon processing.

Could you tell me how you did that?

i have a different interesting find; cutting down a tree on the surface (z=0) caused the square directly underneath (z-1) to go from (inside dark subterranean) to (inside light above ground)- while the dirt floor was still left behind after the tree was cut down. makes my plump helmet farms a little spotty

Due being able to see through root tiles and the game takes a frame to kill them.

Ah jeez, I have an aquifer embark. I should probably pave over most of my fortress.

It's kinda cool, but mostly craptastically annoying. Kills your uderground farms, cause once the ceiling is pierced, they count as outside, no longer inside.
I hope this is a bug, and it will be fixed.

How do trees grow nowadays? Do they go from sapling to BOOM! Megatree! Or are there stages?

BOOM.  Definitely, definitively BOOM.  And with a quickness too - process can take as little as a week in game time.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

Every unpaved dirt square is about to be covered in a coin stockpile. Just in case.

Update - If you wait a few months and remove all your stockpiles for a giggle you have the world's biggest Menacing Wooden Spike effect, everywhere, all at once, when you hit "resume".

I love that trees work now, and digging through soil makes sense I guess, however it made sense for trees to take a year to grow......

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.
