can trees grow on dug soil staircases?
« on: July 23, 2014, 03:54:35 am »

I am soon about to break the caverns, after paving over every bit of soil I could find, so I won't have to deal with underground trees tearing the place up.

The only soil tiles I have left are dug out natural soil up, down, and up/down staircases.
Can trees grow on those? Should I put hatches (I won't do stockpiles, too ugly) on every one of them?

Why don't you just replace them with block staircases?

Those poor hatches. Everyone neglects hatches.

staircases will suppress plants and trees, stockpiles do too, and are free to create, but if you remove the stockpile a bunch of trees might pop into existence.

Stockpiles will not prevent plants from appearing - in previous versions they certainly prevented saplings from growing to full size, but I'm not sure if that behavior has been established to still be present in version 0.40.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.

I just tried it and it worked about as I said. When you create a stockpile, then new saplings will grow under the stockpile. When you remove the stockpile, fully grown trees will pop into existence. I confirmed this by using the Depot view thing to confirm that the trees weren't there (at least weren't blocking pathing) before the stockpile was removed.

Another thing which I'm pretty sure will work to completely suppress all plant growth at no material cost are fields. Go figure.

When you use a stockpile, does it prevent the saplings from being trampled and killed?

Almost definitely not - dwarves are still walking on the tiles underneath, so they will still trample things on them.

That doesn't mean the code recognizes that, it's called "bugs." Could be that the sapling-trample thing doesn't acknowledge dwarf trampling when a stockpile is over the sapling.
