Monitor aspect ratios
« on: August 01, 2014, 06:08:11 am »

I constantly wonder whether it is entirely necessary to develop for multiple monitor shapes, and, for reasons man was not meant to know, I decided that Bay12 is a good place to ask.

I might need a larger sample size, but so far, at least the 16:10 is far more popular than I expected.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

I like my slightly deformed squares. I'd have more than one if I had the money. I wouldn't even mind throwing an odd long rectangle here or there if I could keep some squarishes around too.

16:9, because most things are 1920x1080 nowadays and 4:3 things can be letterboxed. A small monitor does entice me to keep my desktop organized, though.

EDIT: Oooh oh. Having two 4:3 monitors really helps me when I'm working. I don't know why, I'm just much more organized and on-task if I can have my workspace across two monitors instead of alt-tabbing between windows.

Heh, wasn't being serious there. I voted 16x9, got a 1600x900 monitor. Alas, no monitor lizard. Someday, science, it shall be a thing.

In conclusion:

It seems that having a proper windowed-mode is a good idea, and that I should cater for a variety of monitor shapes and screen resolutions.  And lizards.

I'll leave the poll open, so that the sample size keeps increasing for a while.  Other developers in the future can thus see even better results.
