instant steel?
« on: August 01, 2014, 11:25:31 am »

Umm... I set up a metalsmiths forge and smelter and such, and made charcoal. Now I can make steel.

I don't even have iron revealed, and I didn't bring any, yet I can make steel out of it. Why?
I have a fully geared steel military now, yet I haven't dug out a single iron...

Have you had a caravan destroyed on your map? Could be they brought iron & pig iron with them, which then reverted to your ownership.

1. I am in a untamed wilds

2. I literally set up the metalsmiths in spring (after carpenters and masons)

3. I could instantly make steel.

What version are you playing?  Any mods?

What items did the dwarves bring to the smelter?  Where did the dwarves get those items?  How many steel bars were produced?  Were any items left over in the smelter,  other than the steel bars?

I'm jealous... None of my embarks in .40.X have had that.  :)

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

Well, the only thing to do is give the order and watch what they bring to the smelter.

That is the problem, I would que the job to be done, and it would instantly be done. I had fully geared dwarves in the first summer O_O

Have you messed with the raws at all?

If it's not some strange variant of bug 6970 then I'd have to agree with Button.  It sounds like you've modified the steel-making reaction to have no reagents.

Note that installing graphics sets, or extracting one version of DF on top of another version, are very common ways of accidentally breaking the raws.

Yeah, I still needed coal, It just acted like there was iron every where

The only thing I installed was phoebus, but that was through the lazy newb starter pack.

Could you upload your save to DFFD and post a link here?

No, but hopefully your next game will do it well.
