I'd like to think clay for bricks in the later game, as well as very little elevation to serve for easier town design and extensive farming.

I would actually favor elevation, to show off the multi-z-level view. ;)

The Beginning - Mod Setup and WorldGen

Mod Setup

The game is played with the newest dev version of Masterwork Dwarf Fortress, playing humans. All settings are default, with the exception one: Calender Speed.

Calender Speed alters how fast the game runs. I set it to 1/2 speed, which means that 1 ingame year will take as long as 2 ingame years usually. This means that we have twice as much time to prepare for migrants, attacks and caravans. I choose this setting because aboveground constructions take more time than digging an underground fort for dwarves. It allows a more relaxed gameplay, without having to worry about too early migrants and attacks.

WorldGen

Spoiler: Here our worldmap (click to show/hide)

I choose the pre-set Mandelbrot. A massive lake with mountains and volcanos around it. Being silly humans that dont know how to harness the power of magma, I ignored the volcanos and went straight for a coastal embark. Since trees are scarce, we might bring lots of building materials with use at embark.

Neighbors and Embark Site

All enemies are here, with the curious exception of goblins, the most classical of all. They seemingly did not survive the 100 year worldgen. We also have several cavern races that are not listed.

Calm surroundings with temperate climate and very deep soil and access to fresh water should make our lifes easier. Nothing too hard, since I do very much like to show humans building an outpost, not dead humans lying on outpost streets, torn to pieces by undeads.

The plan is to wall off towards the coast and build a fishing village, farm a bit, and hopefully one day erect a castle on the hill.

Having an intrepid mind they invented firearms and trade muskets or pistols, even handcannons. Lord Conor, our swordsman, takes the crown for the most interesting I think. "He is tall and muscular.  His very long sideburns are braided.  His long moustache is arranged in double braids.  His very long beard is braided.  His hair is clean-shaven."

...

He absolutely detests butterflies.

On the other hand, than402 might be worth a second look too. "She likes shadow creatures for their alien wisdom.  When possible, she prefers to consume golem, bloodworm wine and lich meal."

...

She tends to avoid crowds.  She is rarely happy or enthusiastic.  She is uncomfortable with change.

Meph feels like he has been described perfectly by this part: "He is very slow to anger.  He never feels discouraged.  He is often cheerful.  He is trusting.  He finds rules confining." "He is twenty-eight years old"... (apparently I aged a year, but damn, that was close.)

Bodkin' Asluramet likes adamantine. Good luck with that.

Preparations

A little bit of food and drink, 2 axes and 1 pick, and 200 boulders to quickly set up constructions. Even scarce wood should be enough, if we use the Wood Splitting Block.

We have 10 birds. 1 rooster and 4 hens; 1 gander and 4 geese.

OOC: Everyone got a human. Jaxy, there are no farmers here, you got a misc. human instead.

this looks pretty cool. Pls humanliate me as the most useless adult migrant arriving in the first wave (or if to small or just cool guys, 2nd would be ok, too).
Maybe I'll get on that succession thingy, if I've spare time, when it starts.

Part 2 - We made a huge mistake.

Scrace trees... right. More like no trees.

Temperate... of course. Thats why everything is covered in snow. At least the water is not frozen.

Seriously why would our wagon stop on top of a dune, completely devoid of anything we could need?

PS: Note the multiple z levels on the screenshots. Sadly this map cant really show it off in any way, but we can see up to 15 levels at once. The embark site selector showed elevation with 3-4 for this map by the way, I really wanted to embark on more hills. Guess he counted the levels down into the water as well.

OOC: Timelessbob, what do you mean with access to legends mode? I did export data from it before I played, so... yes? King has no children, I checked.  Saegge, will do. :)

"And it's spring!Imagine how it would be at winter."

"What a crappy place for a city..."

"Let's settle here!"

(All 7:)

"Yay!"

wow...i hope at least we have some seeds

i love our characters' descriptions.pretty much everyone is a weirdo, except for Jaxy and Infinite Castor.i especially like the fact that Lord Connors prefers to consume eternal youth poison,Meph likes agony, and mine prefers to consume...lich and golem(how the hell do you eat a lich or a golem?)

Part 3 - Nobles

We are humans. We love bureaucracy. I think. We should, I am sure of that. So instead of fixing the mistake, we are looking for the person responsible and complain to him. Then we appoint some other people to glorious titles, because that will surely help. But really, what kind of nobles do we humans have?

Turns out, we use pretty much the same system that our shorter, drunker allies use.

We have a caravan leader, quickly appointed our swordsman to the rank of military commander, which will make him feel way more important than he is. Currently we are under siege of a single coyote and a single crab that crabs around the beach. And we made Bodkin the chief of medicine, while having no medical skills at all. Business as usual.

We dont need a sheriff yet, nor broker, bookkeeper or manager. Why? Because we have bureaucrats. Meph the Clueless is one. He does all their jobs at once. And as you can see, there are free spots left as bureaucrats. Thats because you can appoint as many as you like, just like militia captains. You will never run out of brokers to trade in your depots, just because they are drunk, tired or lying around the battlefield with no legs, the lazy chums.

We also dont need an executioner right now, even though I wish we could use one on our glorious caravan leader... Executioners act like hammerers, but they do use edged weapons, swords in fact. We dont do light hammerings. Its more like decapitations. Its perfectly reasonable. You, the lazy farmer, did not make glass quivers within the week, off with your head.

Anyway, I digress. We now have nobles, and you now know what kind of nobles we have. On we go...

thought calm could be a bit boring... Well, that changed quickly. I get more excited with every update!

For the location "choice": Seems like the wagon got stuck because there was suddenly softer(how does one say this correctly?!) sand below the snow

Part 4 - What do we do now?

Its easy. We brought 200 boulders, so we better make something with it. Its pretty much the only resource we have. On a related note, I also just found out that thats not a lake. Its an ocean. Full of salt-water. And there are no river or pools hidden under that snow, its all solid rock. Our only drinks are... 20 units of booze.

The 4 blocks from the mason will be used to make Brick Splitting Blocks, a new custom building. It can split boulders into 8 bricks, used for constructions. That way we get twice as much stuff done. The craftsmans shop is for nestboxes, we want to use the birds to produce eggs. Maybe we can even let them breed for a bit.

The horses I might butcher. We sadly have 1 horse and 1 ironclad horse, which are different creatures and do not breed among each other. Better to get some meat, bones for arrows and leather for a suit of armor for Lord Conor.

We are using the dune wall as natural walls for our first houses. This way we only need to build the ceiling and can fill them with furniture. Like beds... made of wood... god damn it.

Luckily, we are humans. We can buy wood.

Chief of Medicine with no medical skills.
I am broker, bookkeeper and manager, with no skills what so ever.
Only our military commander knows what he is doing, but he is too slow to chase down the camels we spotted.

Gotta love that multi z-level view. I have a hard time playing any other Dwarf Fortress without it now, to be honest.

And goddamn what a Fun embark.
