Uhh... Salt water crocodiles on embark?
« on: September 02, 2014, 10:43:03 pm »

I was just starting a new fortress on a 500 year old world, everything's perfectly normal, when I see at the bottom of the animals list, salt water crocodiles. I thought maybe this was a glitch. So I bought a pair, and embarked. Everything was fine, and my first caravan even had three saltwater crocodiles in it. Is it possible for random creatures to become tame?

Creatures shouldn't just randomly become tame, no. Your civilisation is able to tame creatures though and which animals those are can be slightly random at times so you might get crocodiles with one civ and polar bears with the other, if you know what I mean.

So there's a chance I could get tamed rocs if my civilization is near a roc nest?

I guess it might be possible that they are the result of journey pets.

If it has a PET_EXOTIC or TAMEABLE tag then yes, otherwise no.

[PET_EXOTIC]s aren't tameable in worldgen unless you've modded the Dwarven entity file. Hell, even most [PET]s aren't tameable in worldgen right now. What mods are you running, Stagnantsoul?

I want Jabberers on embark :( or at least bears. Anyway, how is it possible to get animals like crocodiles on embark? Do i just need a bit of luck and a long history to generate?

I think that if your dwarfhome intersects partially with another enviroment, say a swamp, they may have a chance of tamping some animal there if they're tameable.

If you look in legends, civ leaders will venture into the wilderness or underworld to tame various creatures.

Usually foreign civs just bring them in battle when they siege you.  I have not seen dwarfs do this before, but I have not done as much with the latest version yet.  could be a feature?  Cross check against legends and see if your civ leader tamed them.

In the real world has anyone ever tamed a salt water crocodile?

I somehow think these would make horrible, horrible pets.

You have a crocodile, I will not argue with you.
