NATURAL_SKILL = Cave Crocodile Fortress, wtf?
« on: August 13, 2014, 09:42:23 am »

So as I've mentioned in my previous thread, I'm trying to make both my Dwarves and my Goblin invaders little less cowardly.

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=141604.0

So I've tried adding the tag [NATURAL_SKILL:DISCIPLINE:6] to my Dwarves. Unfortunately this seems to break the raws completely, and when I embark I get a team of seven cave crocodiles instead of Dwarves. I'm assuming this is because I've somehow broken the Dwarf template completely and the game is simply freaking out and grabbing the closest available creature RAW instead ("Woah, I have no idea how to process this 'Dwarf' thing, but I'm sure this cave crocodile will be close enough instead...").

I've tried putting the tag in various spots in the Dwarf RAW (although I'm told it shouldn't matter where), and I've tried changing the skill to mining for testing purposes, but alas, I still get Cave Crocodiles instead of Dwarves. Anybody have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Here is my current RAW, for reference. The NATURAL_SKILL tag is just sort of randomly slapped in the midde, but as I said, I've tried it in various spots and nothing seems to make any difference. What am I missing here?

Many of the following tags are actually caste-level tags (in this case, male and female), but because there are no differences between the castes for these tags in a dwarf, you can add them earlier.  Any caste-level tag that occurs before castes are explicitly declared is saved up and placed on any caste that is declared later, unless the caste is explicitly derived from another caste.

Next we use body detail plans (which have their own raw file) to streamline the addition of some of the common materials, tissues and their relationships with each other.

Attributes for dwarves are still described in terms of the median value below, but the actual game effects are altered according to the raw numbers.  The numbers are different percentile values.  1000 is the human median for all attributes, so dwarven strength, for instance, has a higher median of 1250, although they suffer from their smaller size.

These tags establish the growth phases of the creature's life.  The format is (BODY_SIZE|<year>|<day>|<average size>).

[BODY_SIZE:0:0:3000]
[BODY_SIZE:1:168:15000]
[BODY_SIZE:12:0:60000]

These body modifiers give individual dwarves different characteristics.  In the case of HEIGHT, BROADNESS and LENGTH, the modifier is also a percentage change to the BODY_SIZE of the individual creature.  The seven numbers afterward give a distribution of ranges.  Each interval has an equal chance of occurring.

This command lets you select all of the castes again.

[SELECT_CASTE:ALL]

Now we'll select all of the hair tissue layers we can find so that we can add colorations to them.  Even if the castes have different tissue layers, it'll find the layers and establish modifiers for each of the castes properly.

Since your dwarf has "jumped" about 20 spaces down on the list, I'm guessing you've got a whole duplicated file somewhere.

Wow, that was quick! I'd renamed the original file to "creature_standard OLD" and kept it in the same folder. As soon as I removed the extra file I generated a pocket world and was able to embark with 7 legendary miners, perfect!

I'm curious why this happened though; does the game simply check for anything starting with "creature_standard" when looking for critters?

the game initializes every single file in the raws folder

if there are two sets of raws for one creature, shit goes down

If you want to keep backups, make it "standard_creature.txt" or something. It only parses creature files that start with "creature_".

... and then we get civilizations of cave crocodile people that nonetheless count as pets and complain that they're too "injured" to fell trees because they don't have any hands. Gotcha. Lesson learned!

Gotta be a little gentle with the RAWs, duplication leads to unpredictable interestingness as you discovered.  It isnt always cavecrocs, you might be tree creatures with a wagon made of pus pulled by cheese.  Great stuff.

We are enchanted by your more ethical works... and somewhat disturbed by your wagon.

You know, it wouldn't be very difficult to make a working cave croc civ.

You'd have to modify the cave crocs to give them a grasping part and the intelligent tag, alter them to give live birth (nest box civs don't breed so well in fort mode), but beyond that it would work well enough.
