Creating a new civilization: how exactly do I run castes?

So I understand how to work a civilization, for one creature, but how exactly do I work with castes? I understand the [MALE] [FEMALE], but I don't quite get how to put a creature in the caste. Do I put the creature's entire raw like this? [CASTE:(creature name) followed by the rest of their raw?

I'm trying to make a six creature civilization: lowly workers, big strong fighters, fliers, a ******ous, nimble fighter, a **** breathing warrior, and a quadrupedal version of the worker. When going [ENTITY:CREATURE:BLAHBLAHBLAH
ETC.
ETC.
ETC. CASTE: OTHER REATURENAME
Do I put the rest of the other creature's raw here? Or just [MALE] [FEMALE] and their growth rate?

Castes pull from the main part of the creature itself, so you wouldn't need to add anything that was defined before the caste definition was started.

If they have different bodies, then you must not add a body outside of any castes. Instead each body should be given within caste definitions only.

If you made a civ with ant men and humans as a single creature, then you would have to make multiple castes. Two human ones; one for males and one for females. Four for the ants, for their workers, soldiers, drones, and queens.

You cannot have more than one gender in a caste at a time.

I'll see if I can make an example of ant-men and humans. Humans and dwarves or humans and elves wouldn't be a very good example as the only major difference between them is size. Though there are also minor differences, such as dwarves having larger livers or elves have a more colourful variety of hair.

EDIT: Here's a quick and rough human-ant mixed creature. No errorlog, but there may be some hidden quirks I'm unaware of.

You can also take advantage of the fact that DF overwrites values with the last one it reads.  If you notice the race as a whole is bad at non combat skills, but when you vier the Blue Dracon caste you see that most of those skill learning tags are entered again.  Because of that the Blue dracon should have higher non combat skill learn rates, without changing the skill learn rate of the race as a whole.  You may also notice that each caste overwrites the race's description entry with their own.  So each caste has it's own description.

Also it should be noted that if you want both males and females of a certain caste to be possible you have to make 2 castes for it.  One for the male version and one for the female.

Another thing to note is that not all creature tags work in the caste level.

EDIT: I actually didn't see Black Flyme already provided an example.  Oh well, more examples are always good.  Black flyme's example is for creatures that would be completely unrecognizable as members of the same race.  There are far fewer tags before you get into the race's caste entries because there is far fewer things that all the castes share.

I've been working for the past three hours to get details exact on them: Draconian (base, not that great of soldier) Draconian Warrior (bigger, slower, better warrior) Aerial Draconian (same as normal draconian, but with wings and better dodger/ spear skills) Draconian Rogue (same as Draconian, but has poisonous sting, spit, bite, and claw attacks, best at unarmed combat and fastest on ground) and Burning Draconian (same as Warrior Draconian, but better with a shield and sword, with a flame jet attack and fire immune super instead of fire immune).

Looks like an interesting race :)
A couple things to note though that don't always work perfectly.

Fliers can sometimes be a little buggy in a fortress race.  I hear there has been some improvement thanks to the addition of some other pathing types.  But keep an eye out for any odd behavior like getting stuck in the air and not knowing how to get down.

And I think the [FIREIMMUNE] tags work in a way, If I understand correctly they prevent the creature from being directly damaged by fireballs and firebreath, and makes them think they can path through lava.  Unfortunately the tags alone don't make them immune to heat itself.  A fireimmune creature who paths through lava is just as dead as anyone else.
Since your entire race is at least fireimmune you can probably solve this by looking at the vanilla dragon and adding these lines somewhere in your creature.

What that does is modify the materials the creature is made of to not react adversely to high temperatures.  Unfortunately these don't work as caste level tags.  Either the whole race will be immune to heat or none will.  There is another method that works properly in castes, but I haven't gotten around to looking it up.

Damn... I meant for the perfect heat resistance to be special for the burning draconian. Like he'd dug deeper into his dragon lineage, and pulled out the dragon's natural abilities. Once I release the mod, the rogue draconian will have done the same for the venom dragon.

I know almost for certain that there is another way that actually works in castes.  It has something to do with replacing that particular caste's materiel with customized ones that are already heat resistant. 

I saw a creature raw once that did it, but when I wanted to go back to look it over to see exactly how it did it I couldn't find it anymore.  I'm sure somebody on this forum knows how it's done.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll try to find that. Finding body defaults and sizes and templates and syndrome rates and all that took forever... The draconians took from humans, cave dragons, my mountain dragon, giant eagle, fire men, fire imps, reptile men, king cobras, humans, dwarves, kobolds, giant desert scorpion, minotaur, and finally, dragons. Took forever to piece them together, so if I can improve them and make them better in any way, I will.
