Seems interesting, but I can see people purposely aggravating police (or trying, at least) to try and claim the money.
So, standard policing tactics?

Not to say "They did it first" justifies anything, but y'know. I probably wouldn't get too broken up about it.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I'd rather people weren't given an incentive to be twats.
Police action will be exonerated if they had body cams recording the purposeful aggravation though.

Right wing extremist makes terrorist threats and then shoots police chief who shows up to investigate three times.  He then surrenders.  The police do not fire a single shot in return, and say that they do not expect there to be any charges...

What the even fuck.
I'm tempted to comment on the irony of the situation since the police chief was apparently black and the shooter was a white guy, but it kinda speaks for itself.

It's Texas. He's white. He's a right wing gun fanatic. The shot officer was black. No charges will be put on him, and his terrorist threats will be ignored until he starts actually shooting up schools. That's the end of the story.

I keep hearing more and more examples of this absurd double standard.

I feel like a lessening of police presence in general would be nice, an overhaul of the entire system best.

There's just a lot of police that shouldn't be police, and they have their department covering for them.

A police chief was the first person walking in the door to get shot multiple times without fire being returned? Between that and a helluva smeary article, I gotta say that if not quite at the point of calling bullshit, I'd certainly be checking my shoes.

I did a brief check for other sources before posting... and found that the event wasn't very widely reported.  Only local news and articles all similar to the addictinginfo one citing the local news.

What seems most unclear to me is what kind of situation it was/would have been.

Also, isn't Texas that one state where it is legal to defend oneself against police if they try to enter your house on unlawful grounds, because of a case where that happened some years back? I'm wondering if that might be related.

As far as I know, it is technically legal to attack police forcing entry by unlawful means in any state that has castle doctrine, which is a large number of them. That said, actually succeeding with that defense almost certainly means shelling out for a lawyer who's smile could singlehandedly cause runaway global warming.

I believe someone in this thread paraphrased this: 'It's cool gaiz, we investigated ourselves and found ourselves totally innocent and not guilty.'
