What's the best way to get towns to grow/encourage growth?
They grow based on each load that is loaded or unloaded there, the size of it is irrelevant. So like greatorder said, buses are good. And then service it with lots of different types of trains (goods, passengers, mail, gold/valuables/diamonds, food, and whatever else the town is associated with) to cause it to grow.

The strategy I've seen two people on YouTube use is thus: Link towns that are close by to each other using a bus route (with about 3 buses) and once that's going, look for a grouping of industries that all work off each other (Iron Mine to Steel Mill, Coal Mine to Powrplant) and link those to a town as well.

When a town is growing, one of them did lay out roads for buildings to appear along, as I believe the towns place them randomly which can lead to dead ends. It was a simple grid pattern spreading out around the town., though he did have to plant trees frequently due to the towns disliking the roads removing them.

Town growth is based on the amount of stations that have processed stuff in recent time, with a maximum of 4 stations. So just set up 4 bus stations and have busses transport passengers from one station to another.

That's all default advice. There are addons that make things much more interesting. At least one makes it so there must be a mix of goods and services.

development of the game is ongoing, id like to see more goods added to each map, ie having water fruit etc on the temperate map along with grain.  THe lack of variety is a major drawdown but keeps it simple.

Also i think use youre user names but put B12 in front of it so we can see eaaaach other on the servers etc.

So ill go as B12Ollobrains.   And so forth

Out of those
FIRS and ECS do much of the same thing in very different ways.
Out of those two, I think FIRS is the one I'd rather be using. Thanks for the help.

I really need a signal combination cheat sheet. I forget how most of it works and the wiki is not great. I wish I had taken better screen shots from the old server. Examples are best.

So is this a general OTTD topic, or do we have a server of somekind? Because I'd be interested in that, I want to do more silly things with boats.

I could maybe host, if needed. No clue about grfs or if my computer will agree with being on all the time, but it might have potential.
