Question about workshops
« on: August 27, 2014, 03:53:35 pm »

Simple question I am having a hard time finding an answer to, something I have always wondered, and should probably be posted on the wiki under the workshop page.

Does the material a workshop is constructed out of have and effect on the quality of an item produced, the speed at which it is produced, the happiness of the dwarf producing the item, or the experience a dwarf earns when making an item at that workshop.
i.e., is a workshop constructed out of gold better than a workshop constructed out of rocks. Or, for example, does the bucket used in building a workshop make the workshop better if it is a masterwork bucket?

If no one knows ill have to do science :p

To the best of my knowledge, it does not.

However, dwarves can get happy thoughts for admiring a fine Trade Depot, which is built with Architecture.  This leads me to speculate that it might be possible for dwarves to get happy thoughts for admiring workshops that are built with Architecture (e.g. Smelters).  But I have never seen this.

They do, if the architecture skill was used.   It also increases the value of the building.  Which increases your wealth.

I suppose it's possible that if Urist McSmith like Microcline and you make the forge out of microcline, he might get more "was satisfied at work lately" thoughts. But I haven't heard that anyone has ever tested this.

This is one thing I really like about DF not being open source. Nobody (except Toady) really knows how it works for certain. So we have lots of opportunities to try things out and do science. I, for one, enjoy that sort of thing. Compare to a complex, but open source, game like nethack where if you're not sure how something works, rather than try and set up a good test, you can just go examine the source. Sure, it's more convenient, but IMHO it's not as much fun.  The game comes down to just doing the things that everyone knows are optimal, instead of hoping that the dwarves will do what you think they'll do.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.
