does anybody know if a better discipline will make them less likely to let them go?  I am all for making a 'horror pit' and dropping Nancys and children in there if it makes them less likely to screw up simple pit jobs.

Ill probably do some experimentation eventually if nobody else has.

I read this thread while i was looking for something else before i built my pit in current fortress. When I start building my pit I find out goblins really tend to escape while hauler dragging them to the pit sometimes.

So I was thinking what if I build the stockpile right next to the hatch cover.

After im done building my pit i did a little test by dropping all 10 goblin prisoners i have into the pit. I'm no sure if im just lucky or something but i did the test 10 times (literally) - start the game, queue up dropping job and wait...and no goblins escape :) .

my setup and some pics i took during the test: http://imgur.com/a/b0edg

Just put block fortifications as the lip of the pit. It's that easy.

Escaping is fixed as of 40.11.

Maybe it can still happen if your hauler's discipline is low, but at least now your military won't interrupt a hauler by attempting to beat the crap out of them.

Running 40.11 and 40.12 I have found occasional goblins will escape when being pitted (using the mass pitting technique from the wiki).  I used to think loads of them were escaping then I noticed they were just climbing back up the walls and into the cage room, despite the hatches not being adjacent to the wall.

Smoothing the pit walls put an end to the climbing and increased the injuries when they reached the bottom of the pit.  Presumably some were slowing themselves down by grabbing the walls on the way down.
