Monotheist Discussion Thread
« on: December 13, 2014, 02:51:24 pm »

Okay so OP closed the last christian thread, and we were having a really lively debate that was halted at a key point.

I'm just making this a monotheist thread because I actually want to learn more about the other two big faiths. Hopefully that doesn't cause everything to crash and burn.

Let's start with slavery:

Colossians 3:22
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.

1 Timothy 6:1
All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered.

Titus 2:9
Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them,

is slavery acceptable, since, per both the old and new testament, it is supported?

See the story of Paul returning a fleeing slave to his master and lecturing the master on being a good christian salve owner.

If you interpret the bible literally on issues like homosexuality, rape, and female submissiveness, don't you then also have to accept slavery as an acceptable institution?

No. See section 27, the relevant piece is the last paragraph. There wasn't really a solid position about it before then. On the other hand, blatant flamebait is blatant.

The thing about these topics is it needs an OP who isn't taking a side, and it doesn't need to start with questions like yours so they don't end up balls of fire.

Discussion is one thing, asking loaded questions to make the religion seem more or less correct doesn't accomplish anything. This topic isn't necessary, and neither is the attitude especially in the context of religion views where people get heated easily. I think there's a reason the last one was closed and this isn't the proper way to continue the conversation. In other words, take it to PMs if there's still such a huge personal argument that you feel needs to be addressed.

I don't think this is flamebait, this is a serious issue that has to be addressed when discussing christianity.

you linked something that is not in the Bible. But the Bible is the will of God. So I guess if you are Catholic you can worm your way out of it... mmm, iI'd question that though, but for these purposes Catholics are exempt.

But other sects don't hold Catholic edicts as above the Bible.

edit: I'm not really arguing, I just want to know how people get from point a to point b on this stuff. Because it didn't link up for me.

Also, I actually enjoy discussing biblical writings.

Yeah, and if you still have such a huge disagreement, then PM the person you were previously having your discussion with in the topic that was closed by said person [due to this aggressive line of discussion]. I'm serious, just take the hint.

This is basically how I feel about it. Cryxis closed the thread for a good reason, and just starting another to continue the problem is counterproductive.

Like this, it's written in all the right ways to irritate people, intentional or not. If you're willing to expand on it I'd be willing to respond in PM's, but I have to go do things and I probably won't be able to reply until this evening.
