I'm not sure if the engineers would work as a guild by themselves. They rely on the carpenters/metalsmiths/masons to actually build anything, so they'd be more a sub-faction that the carpenters, metalsmiths and masons try to win to their side, which makes for some amusing political drama.
miners/engineers?
fisher/farmers?

Im unsure why either of those two are winners by their own.  Miners for lack of product and fishers for being dangerous/fickle

The idea is that no one guild would be able to work by themselves, instead they'd be the specialists that hoarded their "trade secrets" in exchange for the products of others.  Agreements of "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours", which basically trade a point for a point or a skill for a skill will just develop naturally among Players.  Of course, there will be some competition for things as guild-members could be masons primarily but also have, say, a legendary engineer in their ranks as well that turns out some pretty impressive stuff - so the Metal-smith's guild could contract that legendary engineer from the masons to help them build a trap hallway in front of their barracks with masterfully created mechanisms.  In return, they might agree to set the mason's guild up with full sets of armor.  Of course, that would require that either the masons or the metal-smith's guild get a contract going with the mining or trading guild for the resources to do so, which might also include a contract with the wood-workers guild to get wood for the charcoal if a magma isn't handy...  Basically what we'd have here is a working economy.

Eventually, some guild or other would find themselves with more trade points than they had a use for, and they could use that to "buy" a position of nobility, like Mayor, Sheriff, Baron, Broker, Hammerer or Captain of the Guard.  (I see those positions being auctioned off to the highest bidder, with Players offering both points, guild owned items and acts of "community service" to the fortress in general in the effort of one-upping the last bid. Obviously, this will be easier for guilds with more trade points.)  Some nobles will make mandates that other guilds would have to do "for free", and which would be owned by the noble's guild after they were made.  Being able to imprison other members of the fortress in your specially prepared dank dungeon of despair for not creating what you want is just frosting on the cake.

Of course, having most of the fortress residents also be well trained fighters is good for everybody when a force of evil or an FB arrives - the guild being played wouldn't necessarily have to participate in the fighting, but guilds would get +1 trade point for every "significant kill" added to their members as well, so a well-trained guild might want to hog all the glory for themselves instead of letting the other guilds in on the action.

When it would get REALLY cut-throat is when one guild contracts another not to deny their services to a third in order to create an artificial shortage of that service so that the third has to make some agreement with the first to get the needful services of the second or find a way to get them elsewhere - that's when the public posturing and private messages start flying in earnest as everyone seeks to gain some benefit from the situation and the domino-effect ripples around the fortress as a result.  !!Fun!!

Aright guys this turn is taking longer than the half hour I expected so it might be today's tomorrow before I get done.

Hey Bob you haven't officialy asked to for a turn yet and you don't have to, but would you want to be official advisor to the op?

Excuse me, I'd also like a turn, but I can "advise" if you like too.  (I'm not sure whether my pie-in-the-sky ideas will actually bear fruit, as many of my games die from being too complex.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We are the board of fortresses set out from the somber hammer.
The fort is called bookthrowers.

Well here we are in the spring of granite of the fith year.
Bookthrowers strike the earth.
The zubb guild will hold sway over this fort even if it is only me now.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Not a month has gone by yet and we have our makeshift forges up and running
churning out bronze we brought with us.
We had brought clay to build the forges out of, but it must have been the wrong kind.
We use charcoal instead. Perfectlly safe I'm sure.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It is now mid spring and we have built a small farm and still for plump helmets.
We brought whole plants instead of seeds so it will be a while before we get them
in the ground.
Of to the right of the farms is an exploratory hall that leads down and back left
one level to search out a way past the aquifer.
I'm not going to tackle that in my first year as overseer.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It is the 19th of slate mid spring.
The impending overseer change is making my governance a little troublesome.
It usualy takes years to build my forts.
I've sped up my normal construction.
The main dining hall in the middle was going to have walnut floor, but that was
taking too long.
The room off to the left is going to be my guild hall, with some restaraunt booths
in it.

8th felsit late spring
It seems my fellow dwarfs have learned how to sleep in chairs.
It is either a new fad, or a coincidence.

7th malachite mid summer
Migrants, finaly more workers for the work pile.
I will hand pick one of these new guys for my guild.
"Kubuk zubb" will join me "zubb zubb" in my guild.

It is 26th galena late summer
I have caught up with getting the fort up and running.
I have orderd the forgeing of some armor for me and the new guy in my guild.
Putting floor into the food hall took a while ,but its going in.
I just noticed the dwarfs now strap weapons to themselves, very cool.

9th limestone early autum
Building a raggedy road out front and getting some things ready for an aquifer
breach.
These will most likely be for the next overseer.

The outpost brought news of more forts being founded.
I sold some bronze picks and bought some steel and an anvil.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

28th sandstone mid autum.
More migrants for the migrant trhone or whatever.

1st moonstone
It is finaly winter, almost done with my turn.
I put in a kiln to collect clay for any futer building.
I have three dwarfs out of 22 for my group.
I think we are definatly going to have to put alot of players in the same guild
or else one guild or the other wont get ay use for years and years.

Kobold!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

17th moonstone
We got a farmer possesd.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

20th opal
Buzzards. Stole the berries I had outside.
No one likes Buzzards.
I had all the valuables brought inside.

I'm done next guy's turn.
I have my three dorfs in a squad training every other month and farming the rest.

The save.

I thought about the money thing.
I don't like the idea of limiting guilds to only one type of work.
We could get paid for certain things and spend the dwarf point on a service even if it is not our turn.

You could get dwarf points for one of your guys killing a named thing or one of your guys making an artifact.

I think this will develope as it goes along.

Buzzards are right pricks. Suggested course of action? Kill some of them and make ammo from their bones. Then use the bolts of their kin to kill the remaining birds! That'll show 'em.

Next turn is tonnot98, I believe. tonnot98, give us a shout to let us know you're still here, please.

I apologise in advance if my idea gives you too much "paperwork" keeping the points straight.

It's zubbs' call, but I'd say just take your turn now, being as we haven't heard anything from 4maskwolf.
