Bloodborne - FromSoftware 2015
« on: September 24, 2014, 02:07:06 pm »

Yep, the same people who did Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are back with... well, kinda more of the same.  Bloodborne is PS4 and "sometime in 2015" and looks to be a very slightly more modern Dark Souls with more grimdark.  You're placed in one city, which seems to get back closer to Dark Souls 1's style of 'close area' as opposed to Dark Souls 2's style of 'you're traveling the whole country'.  There's guns, there's trench coats, there's coffins in the streets, and there's 'some sort of sickness that turns people super violent and zombies'.

It seems to run of FromSoftware's same game engine, updated for PS4's higher power.  So a lot of the graphics and action is functionally the same as previous games, giving it a familiar feeling.  It looks to be, right now, 'more of the same' from the company, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Wow, that was quick. I'm okay with this, though.

Hopefully it gets a PC release because I have no intention of investing in the new console generation for another 3-5 years.

I suspect it will be a Sony Exclusive.  Miyazaki is a beast though (pun intended: Project Beast), and if it's as innovate and interesting as Demons Souls was it will be a fantastic game.  If it's like DkS2 though, meh.

Would be cool if it comes to PC, otherwise I probably won't play it.

Just a shameless necro here, the game is out.
And it's pretty good, if you have a PS4 I highly suggest getting it.

A shame that I will never care to own a console again

Unfortunately I don't have a PS4, and it's an exclusive.
Fortunately my sister does.

Blooodborne is more focused on quick offence than the cautious defence of Dark Souls.

It looks ok and I loved that they finally decided to stray a little bit from the demon souls/dark souls basic formula, but yeeeea, console exclusive, thanks but no thanks.

I dunno, I'm really mixed on this.

I like the theme. Reminds me of Mordheim a lot.

I don't really like how it is in a lot of ways a re-skinned Dark Souls. Work on this game started around the time of the Dark Souls DLC, and it definitely seems like they forked the team between DS2 and this. I mean, lots of games do this, but there's so much borrowed tech and ideas, from the UI to the mechanics to the animations, that I kept getting confused by which game I was looking at in the videos, they're that similar in tone and what not. Maybe I'm just full up from DS2, but this is something I feel like I can wait a long time to play if it ever comes to PC. It's not that I think it's bad, it just feels like more of the same right on the heels of DS2. Change the gameplay from rewarding defense to rewarding offense, add in some gimmicks with what is essentially 2-handed mode for weapons, rename some thing, yadda yadda. But it still pretty much looks and sounds like DS2, when you consider all the things that are still essentially the same. (Stats, dat reticule, Estus/Blood Flasks, Bonfires, the list goes on.) I suspect this game was made for people who were not into the highly medieval European fantasy look of DS, so they decided to make something grim dark and more modern.

The package will come with a new season of Firefly, too.

Infinite wrath, and infinite despair?
Which way I fly is Hell; myself am Hell;
And, in the lowest deep, a lower deep
Still threatening to devour me opens wide,
To which the Hell I suffer seems a Heaven.
