*ahem* Rather than try to continue the old thread, let's just start over and try this again! Last time IRL shenanigans got between you and me DF, but not this time, THIS TIME YOU SHALL BE DEFEAT.

I've no clue how this game works at all.

I do read lots of upper boards stuff, so I'm prepared for this:

And this:

And this:

Anyways, enough of that-

-let's get to work.

Righty, so worldgen. I'm assuming as a beginner that I want a small world with medium history and civs, max sites, min beasts and savagery, and maximum minerals. What's recommended?

That's a lot of gifs. So many gifs. (Carp haven't been homicidal maniacs for a few years now. And what game is that with the fetching explosion?)

The wiki has a very helpful quickstart guide:
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Quickstart_guide

(A lot of people also seem to like Youtube tutorials, which I assume are easy enough to find with a search.)

Worldgen settings generally don't have a huge effect on gameplay unless you get into the advanced settings and do something extreme. The wiki suggests starting with Short history, Very Low savagery, Frequent minerals, and everything else default. All that sounds about right to me. I guess you could jack up mineral frequency to the max, but I expect you'd end up with more ore than you could actually use.

That delicious tasty explosion is from Cortex Command! Great game, I recommend it.

Yeah I'll be working with tutorials open in other tabs (probably), I just want to play along with friends. :3 (Should I move this somewhere else..?)

Alrighty, we'll go with that then.

This mountain here in the middle is pretty huge, Dark gobbo and Elf fort up to the northeast, couple more human hamlets around there as well as down to the south and another small mountain way to the east. Nothing terribly crazy so far, so we'll go ahead and use this world.

This place looks nice. Whole area is Clay, Some soil, Shallow metal, Deep metals, plus there's a stream just there so that's excellent.

Righty, walk me through this bit. Also who wants to be dorfized?

So, I recommend removing the fabrics and replacing it with cave spider silk stuff, because half price fabric is good. You probably don't need to start out with splints/wheelbarrows either, they are pretty easy to make yourself.

Also, dwarf me as a mason please!

Embark skills matter less than you might think, because dwarfs can pick up skills on the fly pretty quickly and even an untrained peasant is serviceable at most tasks. Generally I go with two max skill miners, two max skill growers, two soldiers (all points divided between Armor User, Shield User, Dodger, and a weapon skill), and one expedition leader/doctor (one point each in Appraiser, Judge of Intent, Organizer, Bookkeeper, and Diagnostician). That covers shelter, food, defense, and trade. From there you can divvy up the more important crafting skills (Carpenter, Mason, Stonecrafter, Armorsmith, Weaponsmith, Mechanic) among the non-soldiers as you see fit. You'll want to assign stuff like woodcutting and brewing after you embark, but it's not worth investing in now.

For items, the essentials are 2 picks, an axe, an anvil, some Plump Helmet Spawn (they're cheap, so bring 20), and enough food and drink (40 and 60 respectively) to survive until the first autumn caravan shows up. Generally you'll want some dogs and cats for various useful purposes that may or may not involve eating kittens. If you want to try your hand at livestock, get some turkey hens (cheap, easy to manage, and lay a ton of eggs).

The default item package has a bunch of pre-crafted stuff that's useful to have around, but most of it is easy enough to craft on site that you're better off buying raw materials like leather and thread.

Oh, cool. That's all very useful advice and exactly what I was looking for. Just now I was dumping points into whatever skill people asked for when I dorfed 'em.
