Rise of Civilization (7/11)
« on: October 14, 2014, 01:35:41 pm »

It is the dawn of a new era.  Within one area of the world, eleven groups gathered in such scale as to be classified as a civilization.  They are all very new, but carry the potential of carrying themselves into becoming a grand force within the world.  However, some will be doomed to obscurity.  Will one of them be yours?

Primary Religion: No religion.

This should be fun.

I have to ask, why "No Religion"?  Even with +4 in technology, they really don't understand how the world works, which, at very least, would cause them to develop belief in some force to explain it.

Mainly? Because they don't require a force to explain it. They don't really care WHY things are here. They HAD a religion at one point. Then they discovered something that contradicted it. A second religion popped up and the same thing happened. Now nothing short of a deity appearing to them will sway their minds. Yes, a FEW people believe in this or that, but most don't care.

Though, I am curious, what exactly does ++++ get me for Tech level?

Iron Age.  However, while you can produce iron units, you don't have any or can make any due to not having access to iron.  Best you can currently produce is Bronze-outfitted soldiers, though your supplies aren't that large.

Yes, it's almost like I've set myself up to be a producer of goods in an attempt to become a trading and industrial ally to someone with a lot of raw iron but no food or wood. Hm... Funny that.

Better be on good relations with 9, then, as merchants prefer the river.  Whoever is there can cut off your trade easily.  And if you art trying to get some from 1, you have to go through 4 as well.

You are in the middle of the desert that looks like this:

So, your architectural style of a 'rainbow of color' is impossible.  Beige sandstone is the only material you have to build with.

Also, you didn't follow the rules with the stats.

Probs misred the stat rules.

And you would be surprised with how many dyes you can make from desert flora and fauna. Although might as well move location if the desert is like that.

Edited.

Hate to point this out, but since you link the Sahara in particular, you do know that the only reason ancient Egyptian architecture looks all sandstone is because of millennia of sandblasting removing all of the original exterior paints, right?  The exteriors of places like the Luxor Temple would have been covered in massive paintings depicting the many and myriad victories of the Pharaohs, for instance, and while dulled, many of these actually survived on the interiors.

Also, provisional watch.

Couple things:
First, Egyptians originated from the Nile River delta and covered a great deal of territory along the river.  People in that start are originating from the desert and have very little territory.
Second, I didn't say it was devoid of dyes, just that a rainbow of color is impossible.  The comment on beige sandstone being the only building material was meant to meant that any dyes that could be gotten were in quantities low enough that you couldn't get the buildings coated, like his post implies his buildings are.  There are some fairly rare cacti that could be made into dyes, but would only be sources of a very limited number of dye types.

If you note, I switched location, rendering this argument irrelevant.
