Chess Discussion Thread
« on: November 10, 2014, 04:56:23 pm »

I was debating on whether or not to put this in Other Games or General Discussion, but since chess is *sorta* a sport too so I guess I'm putting it here.

Resources

Chesscademy - The closest you can get to a free comprehensive chess tutorial
Chess.com - More professional than Chesscademy and also offer commentators on chess championship games, but cost money for most resources.
Lichess - Let you play chess online with your friends. No sign-up required.

I'm also going to put this casual game me and Tiruin played.

OMG Queen OP, nerf plz

Seriously though, chess is one of those things I've always wanted to get into, but just can't. I lack that ability to think 5-10 moves ahead, so I'm easy for a good player to draw into a trap.

I would also be into getting into chess apart from the bit where you have to memorise all of the fucking openings. Seriously who decided to sit down with the game and go "hey let's find the optimal strategies to start the game with so that I can make it as formulaic as possible". I bet they kicked puppies too.

Me neither, really. In the game in the OP I didn't really plan anything further than 3 moves, I'm just creating advantages for myself and limiting Tiruin's choice in the hope that an opportunity crop up for me.

Chesscademy has been pretty useful on that, though, and most of the time the best way to learn how to plan ahead is to play against yourself. :3

Eh, I don't think people memorize openings. It's more of an acquired skill that you get after you play enough chess games. What's actually important is that you follow the three tenets of opening theory: 1. Develop 2. Control 3. King's safety.

I think they do. That's why there's encyclopaedias full of the things.

World class chess players not only study and memorize hundreds of openings, but also some entire games.

Eh, it's still more of a convenience than any actual concrete advantage if your opponent knows what they're doing. Most standard openings tend to result in comparable advantages for both sides, so it's just a question of playstyle and psychological warfare.

Well, it's better to memorize games than to just memorize the openings. It's fun to reenact famous games when the situation calls for it.

It's been ages since I last played chess.

I really need to get back into that, so I'm going to watch this thread.

Umm....have you ever looked at the wealth of metagaming stuff out there for LoL, Hearthstone, etc? I guarantee you there are people who have memorized counter-builds for every LoL champion/gear combos.

Which is probably why I did relatively well at LoL, because I never paid any attention to that crap and just used the characters I liked and built how I wanted. Which fucks up the counter-meta.

Checkers.  Im a boss with that.
I always hate it when people try to compare chess and checkers.

Er, no offense.

I used to play chess with a mentor of mine back in the day. I beat my father at it a few times. He taught me to play when I was... five? Six? Something like that.

Hello, chess peoples.

Checkers is a bit like chess with the strategy cut out. It's almost pure mind games.

That's why Im so much better.  :P
No comparison was made between the two.

We've tried to play forum chess in a few short-lived threads before . . . can we actually do it now?
