Non-dwarves joining Dwarf Fortress?
« on: November 14, 2014, 08:38:50 am »

Hello all - I have been playing DF Fortress mode for about 6 months or so, and now that I am reasonably comfortable with that I am itching to give Adventure Mode a try. I am wondering now - I've read that adventurers may join you in Fortress Mode after you have quit, is this exclusive to Dwarves? I mean - if I make a human adventurer, for example, will he arrive at my fortress in fortress mode, or is that only if it's a dwarf? How about other non-dwarves? Do non-dwarf adventurers join civilizations of their respective race?

From what I remember, migration is exclusive to dwarves. Though your adventurer will join the civilization that owns the site that they retired in. Similarly, there are NPCs that live in civilizations that are different from their race, like humans in dwarven forts or elves in cities. However, these NPCs won't migrate either.

For a unit to be eligible to migrate into a fort, they have to belong to your civilization and be the same race as your civilization's main race. If by chance you were to somehow manage to get a non-dwarf into your fort, they would not be able to perform jobs anyways, as they would be treated as animals instead. Multi-racial forts are not supported yet, to my knowledge.

Though all of this is based on what I remember from version 0.34 of Dwarf Fortress.

I recommend building a small fort, retiring it, moving there with your dorf adventurer (who I am assuming will be some kind of supersoldier or something), then starting back up.

That should work, right?

That will sort of work.  Most creatures that are inside the fort site when you start will be friendly to your dwarves, but not under your control.  Your supersoldier (and any of his followers) would fight any attackers who happen to come near him, but you'd have to make clever use of cage traps or something to move them where you want (or just place your fortress entrace near them).  They will never need to eat or sleep, so they could be pretty useful.  However you won't be able to provide them with medical care or upgrade their equipment.  Than again, I haven't actually tried this with a dwarf, so I'm not 100% sure that you won't get the adventurer as a member of your fort, but I don't think so.

I don't know if it's possible for a dwarf who is already at your site to "immigrate" to your site, but I suspect not.  If you want your adventurer to immigrate to your fort I think you need to retire him at another site in your civ, and hope that he comes in with the other migrants.

most assured way to get your adventurer into your fort is to become monarch of your civ.

I once brought a Dwarf to my fortress and retired him there. When I reassumed control of the fortress, he was part of my Dwarves, so yes they will join your citizens. I think this was in version 40.10, but I doubt it's changed.

How?

Also, all of my adventurers were hostile in fort mode, even dwarfes of the same civ.

Luck, mostly. Settle your adventurer in a dwarven-owned site, and find some way to keep killing monarchs until your adventurer gets chosen instead of some random dwarf.

I once had my adventurer become a baron after the last one was killed by a different adventurer.

I also had a hostile adventurer in fort-mode, but they didn't act hostile. It was several versions ago, so I'm not sure of how much has changed in that regard.

Non-dwarf adventurers that are retired at a fortress are useless, but otherwise you can get a bunch of super-dwarves by repeatedly retiring dwarves at your own fortress.
?Maybe the hostile adventurer was a member of a hostile civilization?

If you retire with companions who are also dwarves, will they become part of the fortress as well?  If so, you could recruit your military as followers, take them out for some "intensive training", and then very quickly train up a whole army of super-dwarves.

Not sure how worthwhile this is given that there are many other exploits which allow you to quickly train your military, but this still sounds kind of fun.  It would be cool if you could lead your military to take out the neighboring goblin settlement or whatever and then return them to the fort when you are done.
