Non-intelligent Civs
« on: November 23, 2014, 07:19:59 pm »

Just out of curiosity, what happens when an entity is set to be made up of non sapient creatures, ie. ones without either CAN_SPEAK or CAN_LEARN or both? I know a lack of CAN_LEARN leads to being unable to level up skills in adventure mode, but apart from that, is there any bizarre behaviour, in either adventure or fortress mode?

For context, I'm making a generic animalfolk mod, so all those moose men and coati women actually do something other than mill around your fort aimlessly.

Animalmen can do both. I had a master spearman cave swallow man at one point.

Yes, I know; I'm thinking of adding other humanoid creatures like yetis and sasquatches to the list of possible species, and I'm wondering what issues would arise from a civilisation being unable to speak and/or learn. It's an interesting question in the abstract as well; imagine a dog civilisation - what would happen there?

Civs being unable to speak automatically makes them hostile to speaking races. I haven't tried or seen non-learning civs' behaviour though.

Thanks! I'll probably then edit the animal man template to include an ability to speak. I want them to be low level, early on traders/ambushers; their entity files are quite similar to the cave animalmen already in the game. Those are not always hostile, or are they?

Its more the fact that they cant make peace apparently.

Yeah, I think the reason was that without CAN_SPEAK they can't agree to treaties.

are you sure? Mountain gnomes have can_learn but not can_speak (and you can butcher them because of it) but they are not automatically hostile.

Mountain gnomes are also not an entity. I think Wysthric's got the right idea, from the looks of things.
