legendary tanners and the artefact bone greaves
« on: November 23, 2014, 03:31:07 am »

So, one of my farmers got into a fell mood, made an artifact *leather shoe*  ( "yay" ) and became a legendary tanner.  Is there... a point to a legendary tanner?  I mean sure he can tan fast but... is that it?  Does he gain other bonuses?

A while later, another farmer also got a fell mood and made an artifact "blocky wolf bone greaves".  How much better is an artifact vs normal?  Am I better off with plain old metal greaves?  (this may be irrelevant as my game crashed :/ )

First of all, when a dwarf has a fell mood, he murders the nearest dwarf and makes the artifact out of their body part(s). I think you're confusing that with a fey mood, which is one of the three standard strange moods.

Legendary tanners will work quickly, but raw leather doesn't have quality modifiers so there's no other benefit.

Artifact bone armor is much better than regular bone/leather armor, but it's still inferior to metal because of bone's terrible material properties. (At least you got a legendary bone carver out of that one).

Yes, you are right, fey not fell.  If there was murder involved, I didn't notice!

A legendary bone carver is great sure... but I already had one :/

I'll have to make sure that no one is wearing the bone greaves then...

you could put the greaves on one of your marksdwarves since they generally wear leather.

I tend to put my artifact armour on my Champion. Just feels appropriate somehow.

I've never had a fell mood. I guess I just keep my dwarves too happy.

Two artifact armour stands in my fort so far (one rose quartz, the other zinc), and a left boot made of zinc. Because we have so very much zinc.... and no other metal ore that I can find so far...

Blocky bone armour? "Blocky"?

This ain't MineCraft, stupid fey-mooding Urist!

I want a fell mood bad. I want lot of fell moods. Too many damn dwarves and dwarf bone furniture would look good in the baron's chambers.

Tell your dwarves that all the rum is gone.

Captain of the Guard Urist McSparrow will not like this.

The single fell mood I've gotten just happened to happen to a dwarf I was monitoring very carefully. He had been unhappy for a long time since losing an arm in a fight and was slowly sliding towards madness. His stress level at the time was around 238 000 but he hadn't yet become haggard or started tantruming yet.

He had a dream "He dreams of creating a great work of art" and had the following personality profile:

"He lives an orderly life, organized and neat.  He cracks easily under pressure.  He rarely feels discouraged.  He thinks he is fairly important in the grand scheme of things.  He tends not to reveal personal information.  He finds obligations confining, though he is conflicted by this for more than one reason.  He is somewhat uncomfortable around those that appear unusual or live differently from himself.  He does not easily hate or develop negative feelings.  He could be considered rude.  He generally acts with a narrow focus on the current activity." This might or might not be relevant.

I think you could encourage fell moods by having few suitable dwarves in a deeply stressed state while keeping them from going insane and destroying your fortress. Do you want to live dangerously?
