Vampires no longer have to completely drain a victim?
« on: November 28, 2014, 04:22:04 am »

In 40.18 I have a confirmed vamp who has left a partially drained victim.  Anyone know if thats intended?

It's just luck. I have had 3 bodies and one pale war dog that died soon afterwards after vampire "visits".

It's probably always been this way. I observed a "pale" dwarf with no medical record in .34.11 and a sweep of the last migrants revealed a vampire. I guess the vamp hadn't been very thirsty or got interrupted.

It has always been this way. Particularly lucky or tough dwarves can occasionally survive being fed upon by a vampire.

That though blood once rescued my legendary weaponssmith hairy butt when it first happened.
Then a second vampire fed upon him before he could fully recover...

I mean... how big are those chances? O.o

Isn't it possible that a drinking vampire gets interrupted?
Always thought that that was the case, leaving the victim alive (for a short time typically)
My current vampire finished each drink though.. and I already beat him up about 5 times.. only received a broken foot. (I think I got 2 vampires, but I always blame the one) :p

If interruption was a problem, then the three fully drained bodies in the middle of my crowded dining room would have just resulted in pale dorfs, and anyhow, the animal handler who got pale when "alone" in his bedroom was definitely not the result of an interrupted vampire. When I first got my vampire, I remember looking up a thread somewhere which said that pale dorfs were a thing, and that there was documentation on it, but I can't find it now, so I don't think it's a new feature, just one you haven't encountered until now.

Oddly, my current fort seems vampire free.... For now, at least. I don't doubt the moment I say that, though, there will be a corpse TOTALLY DRAINED OF BLOOD in the staircase or something.

Is it possible that the dwarves are waking up before the vampires finish?

I think it is, but can't prove it.

My mayor vampire met his ending in a sparkling way : Got his head bitten off whilest pulverising the trunk of a forbidden beast.
The second vampire made a mistake to drink blood from 1 of my legendary planters, who was married with another legendary planter (ie. they tend to stick together)

I think the wiki said that already?

A dwarf who is suddenly pale or faint for no explained reason is a good but rare indicator that a vampire is around. He was most likely fed upon by a vampire, but survived.

IIRC, the draining happens pretty instantaneously, and the amount or blood the vampire sucks depends on how thirsty it is. Usually vampires suck only when very thirsty so the victim dies

Very big.

Vampires are known to attack most valuable dwarfs first.
