How do I make a graphics tileset?
« on: December 06, 2014, 05:11:00 pm »

I want to make a tileset that...
  • Has graphics for every caste of every race, complete with them having different sprites for jobs.
  • Can go with Text Will Be Text.

Download a graphics set that does all of the above and draw new art for it. Give credit or thanks in your description later.

There are no graphics sets that have graphics for castes because you cannot have graphics for castes.

The lack of caste graphics is a pretty big brick wall.

And here is when I fall short, I have no idea how to make graphics.

Look in the graphics folder of a vanilla DF install. There's a tutorial there.

Additionally, there's the wiki page:

Could you be more specific? What aspect of making graphics are you unsure about? Is it finding a good pixel art program or writing the accompanying text files? Giving us some more detail on where you are stuck can be helpful.

It's the pixel art part, all I have is MSpaint(the old version) and an outdated version of GIMP.

A wise computer animator once told me "It isn't the computer or the software that you have that makes the difference, it is what you do with what you have that counts."

Can't say I always believe him. I sure love faster computers.. But for now I'm going to have to live with this ghetto laptop.

I am a big fan of gimp, and I think it is a very powerful tool. But there are certainly other software programs out there that can do the job more efficiently.

If it is a matter of skill that concerns you can look at how bad I was/am >.> Looking at other peoples bad art is one of the ways I don't feel as bad about my own bad art! I am better now though than I was before.

There are some pretty amazing artists here. If you feel a lack of inspiration, browse through some of the things they have done.

If you need some inspiration/references you could always try to do a google search. Google has a way so that you can look for specific sized tiles. I've found good designs and ideas from looking up 12x12 goblins for example. Though you have to wade through a lot of images that are completely worthless. >.>

In any case, just hunker down and draw some stuff. If you feel you have come up short remember to be patient with yourself.

If you have trouble using certain aspects of gimp I know that there are other's here that use it as well. Or are at least familiar with it. Ask away, just try to be specific.

Oh man, don't remind me, I still have to find time to work on that tutorial.

Really, the easiest way to make your own creature graphics is taking an existing set and using it as template. That way you already have the right raws, image dimensions, etc. You just need to remove the old graphic and draw your own.
Google will give you dozens of general GIMP and pixel art tutorials if you need more information on that.

I do all of my pixel work with Paint.net

http://www.getpaint.net/

It is hard to have a more intuitive layer raster graphics program than that.

It doesn't read very well. I recommend using a dark background and have less contrast are more relationship between the pixels.

As for tips, I would recommend just downloading phoebus or spacefox and picking it apart. Look at the text files and copy their structures. Keep tweaking and fudging around with it until it works.
