Starting new community fortress - Suggest challenges
« on: December 11, 2014, 08:06:48 am »

So, I'm thinking of starting a new community fortress. I'd like to take suggestions on embark areas, playstyles/challenges, and so forth.
Warning, however, I am not a particularly skilled player,  so there is a good chance that !FUN! will be had if magma is in any way involved.
I make my decision Saturday

While community input is nice and all, it's usually best to come to this forum with the details fairly prepared. There are always people willing to try out pretty much any idea, so it's best when you take the lead and give people the simple choice of whether to join your fortress or to pass on it. This prevents a meandering and convoluted thread of Q & A while also encouraging quick turn playthroughs.

If you are new, don't fret - any old embark will be ripe with player-created challenge and story.

he said community, not succession fort

as to an actual suggestion, try playing with another race than dwarves.

ooh, that might be interesting, I'd likely do humans, although I might need to tinker with the raws.

well, there's always masterwork. but if you want to play in the new version and need help with the raws, let me know

since humans don't dig very much, i would go with a coastal town.

All right, human coastal map it is.
I know how to tinker with the RAWS, but I don't know what exactly what is needed, other than the one tag.

if i were you, i would also remove these two tokens

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

and instead give them dwarven noble positions. also make sure they have access to all the labors, buildings and reactions dwarves have

I'm pretty busy tomorrow, so the fort might not get started until mid-week

Suggestion: Megaconstruction.

A huge marble castle in the shape of a toilet that actually flushes.  Call the Fortress "Whitecastle".  Have it fill the bowl using a pump-stack and a bridge attached to a lever room where the actual flushing handle would be that operates it to dump the bowl of water into a 5x5 downward sloping ramp that empties out into the caverns.

If I might make a suggestion, try using this save...

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10241

It's a succession fort I've already had going.  Yet, instead of playing the fort (I know you obviously want to start a new fort), immediately retire the fort and go and create another fort somewhere else in the same world.

That way, if you ever decide to go adventuring (always the most interesting in worlds with player-created forts made by someone else, due to the ruins to explore and the artifacts one can then happen to stumble across...) you'll have somewhere to visit.  And it might also make a few more types of goods available through the Dwarven trade caravan/ at Embark... (as I understand it, available Embark supplies are determined by what goods the civilization has access to- which is determined partly by active sites)

I'd also be interested to see what else you do with my world- so it'd get you another follower...

Regards,
Northstar

P.S.  If you know how to edit Raws, you can still play as Humans- just edit the Raws for the base game AND the save to make humans playable.  Also, you might have to create a Human "Outsider" adventurer, and retire them, as I believe there's only the remnants of one human civilization left on the map (hiding in Kobold caves somewhere).  That was actually the human's own fault- several human necromancers arose, and destroyed the only major human civilizations that hadn't been conquered by Goblins.  The necromancers also tried to exterminate the nearby Elves- though they failed at this...  :D

Here's a challenge: Make a tube that leads demons out of hell and straight towards the surface.
