Females in Games? Thread
« on: December 16, 2014, 04:09:05 pm »

:-\  These things tend not to stay unlocked, and threads in general don't survive transplantations very well, but here it is.  A debate in DF Suggestions was a bit overdue to make its way down here.  Its about women in games, and had about 9-10 pages of unmoderated activity here in a thread about procedurally generated gender.

Oh hello, PTW.

And that last bit about female russians? (double-quoted btw)

PLEASE give me a game where I play as the #1 sniper in the world - a russian female whose 300-odd total confirmed kills included 30-some other snipers. Or the witch-bombers? Hnng.

my last quote form the post

Yes there are male prop characters, but when 99 if not 100% of your females are prop characters, that's a big difference. If all your protagonists are males.

The new Metroid is very different from the glorious old metroids where Samus' gender was completely irrelevant and a pleasant surprise at the end. I am not talking about the original Metroid.

Pisskop, I don't know if you want the same thing out of the game as a woman might. Plus it's not about being a sex magnet or not. I don't want that in a game, but these characters do not exist to appeal to women in a way that says "play a character that is super sexy" they are there to appeal to men in a way that say "jerk off to this while you play the game." They are making female characters that specifically exist as sexual fantasies of males, see my comments about moxxi being sexy but not sexist.

There's also the fact that deeply ingrained in many women is a self-loathing over appearance that I don't think fully exists for men, so these unrealistic images can further degrade our own self-esteem. There's a reason you never ever call a woman fat, even in jest.

I don't know what you mean about the USSR, the soviets were generally about gender equality, it's one of Marx's principles. But it's also a video game and not real life or a documentary. It's not even going to be particularly realistic most of the times, anyway.

The problem with saying "oh this is a problem with women character, but sometimes it's totally true for male characters also" is that you are not perceiving the disparity with regards to how male characters are represented across the board versus female characters and those kind of statements trivialize the problems of women in gaming.

There was also this thread on women and tvtropes in gaming a ways back: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=124353.0 I think it got locked because of gamegate derails, not sure.

How is gamergate even an issue. Are there real people convinced that some angry ex-boyfriend's rant requires a "Serious" discussion about ethic in gaming journalism up to and including doxxing and rape and murder threats of any women that speak on the issue?

The whole thing is a monstrous parody that seems entirely implausible but is somehow a thing.

I'm just not sure the reason why that thread got locked, not trying to make an issue of gamergate.

It's my magic power. Find gendered discussion and post angrily in response. It's kind of a limited super power, tbh.

I think my biggest problem with the entire industry and sexism is that they choose to include scenes of female abuse. IE in watchdogs and mafia and bioshock (I loved bioshock though such a good game). They could have just as easily not had random encounters of abusive-murderous-scumbag husbands killing innocent women. But they included it anyway.

And the few that are holding onto gamergate (is it still a thing in the public eye? I know it's still a thing for the women involved.) are doing so because they srsly are thinking MUH VIDYA and are terrible sexists.

What I like to use as a measure for female characters is whether or not they are sexual characters or they have simply been sexualized.

Moxxi though is a really good example because for the most part while she is a sexual character, how often does engage in fanservice? She likes sex but she doesn't let it define her and through her actions in the game she commands respect.

Yet I don't exactly hold her as a measure for Far-end Sexy Female characters mostly because... and I know it is bad to say this... She isn't really sexy. She wears makeup that is basically caked on and barely moves, and her body proportions are modest for the series. The only thing she does "sexy" is speak in double entendre.

What I mean is, she is a good example of how to do a sex based female character and not have her be about the sex. Yet, you never see her act on it.

There is kind of an issue with declaring a character as a prop in the sense that, it is easy to do it to anyone. As well 99% of all characters are "props", only a hand full ever get to be fully realized characters.

I am always reminded of two characters in this discussion

The First is Lara Croft from the first Tomb Raider who, due to a programming error, got rather sizable breasts and they kept it because people liked them. Yet the series, in spite of this, never actually focused on Lara as a sexual object. A lot of people bring up her appearance as one of the major examples of sexualization, but they always sort of forget that outside advertisement and marketing... The games never really portrayed her as that. In fact the series steadily progressed where she eventually sort of became like a mix between Indiana Jones and James Bond. To the extent that it is her newer incarnation that is closest to fetishizing her, as it attempts to do the typical "Break the woman", something that the original Lara would have handled a lot differently (namely by winning).

The second is the female lead from Alone in the Dark who to this day is the first female character created for a female audience. Who is pretty unique in that she is an older woman (I think she is in her 30s) who wears conservative clothing. She kind of reminds me of a 30 year old Nancy Drew for some reason.

Yet both these characters were considered appealing to women. Though it is telling that Alone in the Dark 3 takes that female lead and turns her into a damsel... (and Alone in the Dark 2 ditched the female lead and had a male only lead... same with 3)

----

The one thing I absolutely hate about these discussions in the end is the Thought Crime aspect. "It was made by men" and "It was made for men" really shouldn't come into play.

There is no problem with female abuse. One of the aspects of not being sexist is not to give anyone special treatment. I think though the difference is the type of abuse women tend to suffer in videogames as well as how it relates to them.

Going to Tomb Raider the latest one. While Nathan Drake went through probably equal punishment to Lara Croft in his games in terms of physical harrowment... Which game tried to break the character down emotionally and make them cry? Which one did attempted rapes?

I don't think a lot of gamer males, especially developers realize why the violence against women by men is so serious. The general excuse is "men are violent in the game against men too and women against men." But this violence, to many people, especially women, underscores the casual violence our gender experiences on a day to day basis that is trivialized and suppressed by society at large.

stuff

Would someone succinctly summarize what the purpose of this thread is? I've read the quoted text in the OP, and it mostly seems to be various opinions from various people, opinions that aren't necessarily incompatible. Different people want different things in their games. There are different games that provide those different things that people want.

What's the problem? Are people seriously complaining that games exist that appeal to people other than themselves? "I like oranges, and the grocery store not only sells oranges, also apples too! How dare they!"

Is that what this is about?

It is mostly because we are diving out of the terrible inane period of "women have forcefields" and haven't found the balance.

But still just because it is an issue in real life it doesn't mean games necessarily have to be the moral guardians of our society.

Hang onto that.  I've got bones to pick with that.  Not against it, but rather that's the source of much of our problems.
