Well the reason why everyone conerns about such kind of things is the unpleasant outcome.

A stressed dorf will go insane, throw trantrum, go berserk, or even worse, cause a tantrum spiral. It is inevitable. So everyone tries to to avoid them: a stressed dorf = a timb bomb. There is currently only one kind of stress.

But I'm sure being horrified is different from being sad, which is different from being annoyed by some jerks.

This need to be countered by a good though when invaders die. Not happiness but at least some relief that creatures bent on killing them has been stopped by the military.

In fact the current system lack a general sense of the situation as news spread among your dwarves, affected by conversation skills. The dwarves may not like seeing someone die but the sergeant conviced them that it was the goblin or them.

If anything dwarves should receive a relieved thought that invaders were killed.

Maybe civilizations should have a chauvinism value, where high chauvinism would mean that they don't place much value on other races and don't suffer such a negative experience from seeing them die.

Also having someone be the enemy of your civilization should reduce the penalty, and maybe even give a positive thought for vengeful types.

There could also be a distinction as to whether the dead creature was hostile and dangerous. A dwarf would be much less sorry that a titan was killed than that some innocent traders were drowned in magma, even if they were elves.
