Dwarf Fortress Hilarity
« on: December 18, 2014, 03:29:51 pm »

I don't even know how this happened.

I was running a very good Fort this time. Everything was going smoothly. I had a bit of a problem getting drinks because I'm a perfectionist, but I got through it and everything was fine. Everyone was happy. I had three squads training year round. No metal, so they were still in the wood shield/training axe/bone helm phase of deployment, but some of them were legendary fighters and the like. Everything was fine.

But then it wasn't.

A werelizard came. Killed two civilians before my military could beat him to death. He wounded two soldiers. One recovered, apparently unaffected, but the other had contracted the disease. My Fort has a long hallway to traverse before getting into the base proper in the mountain, and my military trained near the entrance so they could hold off anything trying to get in. Well, right as a Hauler was walking by, the second soldier morphed intoa  werelizard and gutted him. My military descended upon him and after a brutal fight [legendary fighters, and all.] they downed him. Suddenly I had more dead civilians and wounded military. Then I noticed they kept fighting. Civilians began punching either other. A stoneworker and a brewer got into a fist fight in the hallway. An axedwarf and a farmer teamed up against an Axe Lord, who handed them their asses on a plate. My three doctors, undisturbed by the violence, would run in, grab the wounded, and haul them off to my hospital which was barely even functional at this point. As more and more combatants were transported, the fighting slowly migrated to the hospital. The majority of my military is now dead or dying, my civilians are either horrified, suffering from emotional shock, or are punching each other. The stoneworker and brewer from earlier both passed out, were dragged to the hospital in beds beside one another, woke up and went back to punching each other in the head. They've tired, and severely wounded, but refuse to give up their little feud.

I don't even know how this happened, but I love it.

Loyalty cascades still happen? I thought the dwarf personality rewrites fixed them.

It seems they're still happening then. Normally attacking a were-dwarf is fine, but if a Dwarf ends up wrestling whilst a were-dwarf transforms back into a normal civilian Dwarf this makes those Dwarves enemies of your civilization. Loyalist Dwarves then attack those Dwarves in order to kill enemies of the civ, but as they're attacking their own Dwarves also become enemies of the civ. This continues until all the enemies of the civ are dead.

Loyalty cascades most certainly still happen. I had a fruit picker become huskified by my local "Heinous gloom". As the husk charged towards my fortress entrance i ordered my Mace Lords to kill it. After a quick fight the husk was killed, but then 2 other Mace Lords began breaking every bone in the Mace Lords body who killed the husk. My military then proceeded to self-destruct with heads exploding in gore left and right, by the end i had 2 unconscious Mace Lords left with multiple severe injuries.

After one Mace Lord regained consciousness in the hospital a couple of months later, he exploded the head of his resting comrade in the traction bench next to him.

You're thinking of tantrum spirals.

From the sound of it, this actually is a loyalty cascade. The game can get kinda mixed up when one of your fortress citizens turns into bloodthristy monster, as in: Werething kills a citizen -> UristMcMurder kills Werething -> UristMcMurder just killed an (incorrectly marked) citizen -> UristMcMurder gets murdered -> etc

Though nothing is to say the two things can't happen at once  :P

This "Loyalty cascade" thing sounds like it could be treated by the justice system instead - first the fortress guard should pacify (nonlethal combat from their side, until they take injuries more sever than bruising, let's say?), then judgement. Prison, hammering, execution by hammering in prison, or exile (essentially now the dorf would get escorted out of fortress bounds, after which he'd get the enemy of civ tag).

Yes, IIRC tantrum spirals were fixed by the personality rewrite. Loyalty cascades still happen evidently.

No, that can't happen, because it doesn't work like that. The dwarves in their description text are listed as members of both a civilization and a local group. If they attack, say, merchants from their civ, they become enemies of the civ instantly while remaining a member of the local group. The unaffected in your fort would then attack them, and instantly become enemies of the local group while remaining a member of the civ.

The way to survive is to isolate a pocket of the Unaffected and then for all of the Civ-loyalists and Group-loyalists to die. IIRC war dogs come in handy here because they are incorruptible? You must not let the Unaffected enter combat and take sides.

Something I'm curious about: Do traps trigger on dwarves that are considered hostile?

Hm. I got one of these, too. A werepangolin bit a woodcutter who turned right in the middle of the hospital zone. Hilarity Ensued™, resulting in pretty much everybody dead.
Hasn't happened again though, even with werecreature infections, so I suppose it's a semi-random thing or got (accidentally?) fixed in .40.23...

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

I'm not sure. It just happened again to me, but a werecreature wasn't even involved this time. My mayor just randomly socked a miner in the throat, and now half my fortress is dead. I'm not sure why. Oh well.

I've had it happen before. Or something crazy, anyway. I sent out a three dwarf squad to kill some elven merchants, and after the battle was over, one of them went on a rampage with a two handed sword, killing whatever he could. Finally the leader took him out and went about his day.

clearly your dwarves were elf sympathizers. Do not mourn their loss.

Though, loyalty cascades due to killing elven caravans ? I mean, can't we even not kill elves anymore ?

That one was probably not a cascade. No one attacked the militia leader for killing him. I'm not sure what the hell it was, and I've never had a repeat.
