premade fort

okay so I want to test out my mods in 40.19.

Is there a dfhack script or something similar that will basically start you out with a fort already built?

Putting together a fort just to test some things out, when I might need to go back and edit the raws, and therefore possibly remake everything sounds exhausting.

Can't you reclaim old abandoned forts now? With judicious use of DFhack commands to eliminate FBs/Whatever that lurk in the depths, that will save a fair amount of effort in the actual diggery aspect of the early game.

Profile> Modify Profile> Look and Layout> Current Theme> (change)> Darkling

yea but wouldn't I have to generate an entirely new world each time I modify the raws. And npc forts are built differently. I'd have workshops but not a good supply of food and drink. When I tried reclaiming one it actually seemed like more work than it otherwise would be.

I having problems getting answers to my mod questions. I think I am so ignorant of how to go about it and the wiki provides so few details that when people try to explain to me I don't fully understand, and then they don't want to have to go into further detail because hand holding is exhausting.,

Nah, you sorta just have to figure it out. It's annoying as hell and is a good part of the reason why I sometimes have pernicious bugs crawling about after releases.

What exactly are you using the premade fort for?

my plant mods for brewing kombucha and such.

THere are other parts of the mod involving milk, but I want to test the plant stuff first.

Then you could just use gui/hack-wish to cheat the required items in.

okay i'm going to give that a shot. It will save me time. Thanks. I want to test this out personally so I can better ask questions (or, finger-crossed, it just works perfectly immediately.)

Most of us learn modding by trial and error, so when you ask something we haven't done yet, we really can't help you too much because we genuinely don't know.

I get the impression you could still use some practice with the basic syntax. in my experience, when you're just starting out it's good practice to start with known good raws from vanilla or a mod that you know works, and only change things a few at a time that you really understand.  The wiki isn't a "textbook" maybe, but it's a great reference manual, and it tells you comprehensively what every token does, so when you're looking up one thing at a time it's a great resource.  Once you're comfortable with the basics then you'll be better able to debug things when you're really doing trial and error stuff, and you'll have less chances of making more than one mistake at a time when you're writing a big chunk of raws from scratch.

Okay umm, stupid question, how do I get hack-wish to work. I can't find it under the script or plugin list. I actually built a farm and attempted to grow crops but I was getting errors doing that.

Usually I am fairly quick picking up anything programming-esque, I don't know why I have such a hard time with this. >__>

Try ls -a.
