Friendly Troll
« on: December 27, 2014, 11:03:19 am »

She's just been standing there.
None of the dorfs seem to pay her any mind, no panic or terror or fleeing, just indifference.
She did scare the heck out a kitten who is now wandering the caverns and discovering all sorts of goodies. Bonus!

So what should I do with her?

I wouldnt call her friendly.  Just not currently hostile.  Its just a big semi-intelligent  dog.   and may try to kill something if given the chance.  military or cages.

I advise cages, due to the risk of a military attack on a non-hostile causing a loyalty cascade.

Update.

I decided to just leave her be, and see what happens.

She wandered all the way up through the fortress without incident, that is, until a war dog spotted her.

The dog attacked the troll, and she defended herself. This caused all nearby dorfs to swarm her with their wooden training swords.
She didn't even try to defend herself from their onslaught. She just stood there and died.  :-[

She will be given an appropriate memorial.

I had exactly the same but with a Tamed Hydra... Someone wasn't very happy when it walked past and attacked it. Although my hydra just killed 10 people instead of standing there :/ The person who attacked it had his head chomped off in the first attack!

Dear Urist McStockpileDrone
I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

Even otherwise benign critters  can be attacked or attack.  Your dwarves a proof .

The troll was not benign, but instead evil.  Literally

Well I think it is a bug?

I have seen peaceful undead and peaceful blind cage ogre.
Maybe they are disguised spies, whose evil scents can only be smelted by sensitive animals.

Troll: (speaking with some branches in hand) I'm a Tree.
Urist: Oh, hello tree. I'm Urist McPlanter.
Moldath: Hey Urist, who did you just speak with?
Urist: Well, just a tree. Look, I must finish this farm plot otherwise the boss will have a fit, again.
Moldath: Oh fine, let me help you.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This happened to me once. Two trolls were sitting next to the main staircase, nobody minding them except for one cat which was trapped in a long hallway that attempted to reach the staircase, only to be terrified by the trolls and running away again. Then one of my new military recruits noticed them, ran right for them and killed them both with no weapons and getting a heavily mangled left knee and foot for her troubles.

At first I had thought it was related to the new personality/circumstance engine,
but your mention of similar a similar occurrence with an undead has me questioning.

Are sentient personalities carried over into foul undeath?

Urist McUndead truly treasures the company of others
though she is conflicted by this because she values rending flesh in the abstract.

Well actually newly turned undead are usually deadly and against all life. The friendlies are usually wild undead, like your troll.

This bug is cool, I think.

Also you should have modded your save raws, removed [EVIL] and added [PET_EXOTIC] and tame it.

So you would have a pet troll in your fort.

I have yet to fiddle around with the raws (done some init file tweaks before, but that's it)

Had I done as suggested by Naryar, would it have changed all trolls?

I can just see the dorfs now, trying to give wild boar sweetbreads to invading murderous trolls.
