So, can't sleep, so I dug for some statistics.

Here is the actual list of how many forms were filed in the 2015 fiscal year. So, taking each form and multiplying it by its filing fee, we can actually calculate how much the USCIS earned in filing fees for the 2015 fiscal year.

Doing that for every single data point, we end up with... $3312814300.

That's 3.3 billion dollars.

Now, there is a bit of error here- I assumed that all I-485 applicants were adults. Should they be under 13 years of age, the filing charge is only $685 instead of $985 (you can check my numbers here, here, and here) but that shouldn't be over 100 million in error.

So where the fuck is over a hundred million dollars going?

EDIT: The total operating budget as reported by the US Department of Homeland Security for USCIS for 2015 was $3259885000. So closer to 50 million missing, and note that I did not include biometric scanning costs in any of my numbers. If you add in that, it probably cancels out the error from the I-485's under 13.

And Frumple, it is actually a congressional requirement that USCIS be self-funded through fees. Page iv, section H.

In other words, the US government is entirely funding its immigration process on the fees it makes from immigrants, and then making enough as to actually profit from the immigration fees alone.

tl;dr, the next person you encounter that says we should be spending less on immigration services, you can assume is some combination of ignorant, malicious, or incredibly stupid.

Turns out we're apparently spending less than fucking nothing! Another point of info explaining how our immigrants (documented or not) are managing to be a net economic gain.

Though the question relative to the discussion, I guess, is if we're managing to make more money off them than qatar does through their effective slaving efforts :V

It isn't clear who gave those instructions though.

I've read that provisional ballots are counted as normal votes, so "dummy ballots" is quite misleading.

Uh, last I ran into 'em, yeah. Mostly. Iirc there's some kind of vetting thing before they're officially counted, but they still can be. You would be casting a provisional vote if you showed up to vote sans ID, ferex, from what I recall.

Last I heard the provisional ballots aren't even looked at unless the closeness of the "real" votes demands a recount. But this was from a previous election cycle, things could have changed.

The assumption being that if one candidate won by a decent margin the provisional ballots aren't going to change anything as they'd more or less follow the same pattern.

Don't attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

At least the first time.

Well this isn't the first time that people made accusations of election tampering.  So do we attribute these empty allegations to malice or stupidity?  I'm leaning towards stupidity because well... it's really stupid.

Accusing someone of rigging an election to help the candidate who has consistently lead in the polls, in a race that doesn't even matter but where the consequences of getting caught would be huge... that's a really stupid theory.  If there was actual malice it wouldn't be hard to come up with something plausible.

I'unno, maybe they don't even want something plausible. Could be they don't want to get stuff to stick, for whatever reason, they're just throwing eggs at the wall to make it nasty with oozing yolk.

Unless it's an indication of a larger pattern which has been going on the entire primary season, and nobody's noticed until now.  ;)
