[question] What is a naked mole dog?
« on: January 03, 2008, 09:22:00 am »

DF fauna discussion.

Does it even exists for real?

The closest reference I could find is the naked mole rat.  wiki reference

can't tell much from the raw data too.. beyond that it's structured like most other quadrupled animals...

[BODY:QUADRUPED:TAIL:2EYES:2EARS:NOSE:2LUNGS:HEART:GUTS:ORGANS:THROAT:NECK:SPINE:BRAIN:MOUTH]

If this is imaginary, how should it look like??? (A dog with all hair shaved off?)

The current prime suspect: The naked mole rat

Interesting to find out that it is one of the only two eusocial mammals (eusocial colonies are like bees/termites/ants)

EDIT: added picture

If you take that NM rat, cross it whit a really big bad angry bulldog and and add a few properties like inability to feel pain or fear, then you are pretty close to a NM dog.
Not something you want to meet in a dark alley.

Just imagine a naked mole rat the size of a dog. Yeah, I wouldn't mess with them.

I never actually knew that naked mole rats were considered eusocial- I find this absolutely fascinating as I'd always loved the eusocial insects, and never knew that there were any eusocial vertebrates...

Also, following the link at the bottom of the Wikipedia page I just learned that naked mole rats use tools as well!

I always thought they were kind of neat for how gross they looked, but naked mole rats are downright fascinating! (Subterraneans, tool-using, eusocial, hairless cold-bloded mammals that feel no pain: What's not to love!)

Dwarf Fortress needs Naked Mole Ratmen.

And naked mole dogs need the [painless] (or whatever it is) tag if they don't already have it.

Edit: God damn. God damn. Naked mole dogs already have the [NOPAIN] tag.

This game!

That thing needs some serious dental work.

What's the other eusocial mammal?

He he, yeah, I don't remember where I first saw that they don't have (certain?) pain receptors, but I was all over that.  I've seen several naked mole rat exhibits in various places.  I think they still have them at the Seattle Science Center.  Not sure about the Point Defiance Zoo or Woodland Park.

One of our first stories for the fantasy game (back when we were handing a spiral notebook back and forth, doing alternating chapters) involved an adventurer being trapped without possessions in a cave, somehow killing a naked mole dog, pulling out one of its giant teeth and skinning the corpse with it to make some clothes.

@Dwarfaholic
The other one is the Damaraland_Mole_Rat

 ;) )

Well, that sort of solve one of the countless "mysteries" in DF...

... now, about a certain cave swallowman....

Lastly, here's a 16x16 tribute to this very unusual and very interesting creature....   ;)

That thing is hideous.  I love it.

I didn't know much about naked mole rats, other than that they were subterranean and hairless, and that most of their nerve endings are in the teeth.   I had no idea the naked mole dogs had the [NOPAIN] tag based on anything.

A eusocial (new word, goody) mammal.  Awesome.

You should play Fallout 3 to see a naked mole rat.

Whoah, old topic. Allmost 2 years.

Pretty facinating creatures indeed though, didnt knew the naked mole dog was actualy based on anything.

Those things larger and dog-like, as well as RED, must be a freaky sight...

Hm... which begs the question, in the new system with individual tissue sensitivity levels replacing [NOPAIN] tags, does the naked mole rat still not feel pain?

Probably does if you punch it in the teeth, since apparently that's where the receptors are.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Excellent attention to detail.  If it's not already in, I think it could be accomplished by the following:

[SET_TL_GROUP:BY_CATEGORY:ALL:SKIN]
[PAIN_RECEPTORS:0]   (lowered from the default 5)

The problem here is that we're still treating sensitivity to pain as a single variable, whereas, ideally, we'd be approaching sensitivity to different types of pain. I'm pretty sure naked mole dogs are generally less sensitive to pain, but will still react to many painful stimuli, whereas some stimuli, like acid, they won't react to at all.

So I'd say, as an abstraction within the planned system... I don't know, just give them PAIN_RECEPTORS:1 or something, for lack of anything better.
