Cryptbeards: A fortress for learning about FUN.
« on: October 01, 2015, 10:11:00 am »

Hello short, sturdy creatures fond of drink and industry,

I really should have posted this here much sooner. Sadly I am an indolent fool, happy to rest on his laurels until his arse stinks of laurel leaves. Give me a moment to waft away the leafy odour and I'll tell you a tale...

Two weeks ago, those of you who frequent r/Dwarffortress on Reddit may have seen this post:

I recently picked up DF again after a couple of years of sinful idling and I've fallen in love all over again. During my hiatus from the glory of Amrok I started to stream all my gaming exploits on twitch. Since I've become deeply addicted to the game, it only makes sense for me to combine my passions and stream it too.

Sadly (or happily, depending on your outlook) I am a less than accomplished DF player. I'm hoping that some of the more knowledgeable fortress-heads here will have their curiosity piqued and come join the chat to advise me. Failing that I'm happy for anyone wanting to watch me have so much FUN I break down, to pop in and guffaw at my ineptitude. In case you are wondering about the depths of my incompetence, I am perplexed by the military screen, confounded by nobles, befuddled by managers and generally play in a state of low-level confusion. I suspect this is not uncommon for DF players. My goal is to keep playing through fort failures and learn more about fortress mode, creating short tutorial videos as I learn.

In my wildest dreams I was hoping I could get a couple of new people to come and watch my stream. In the end my viewer count actually more than doubled. It turns out people like watching DF live. Most viewers tell me they have their own forts running or the DF wiki open while I jibber-jabber in the background, making chat a very fertile place for learning. Unfortunately I have already begun the series, so you wonderful forum people have missed the first four episodes OR HAVE YOU???

The Dwarven Fortress "Cryptbeards" has been founded! Thank you to all the groovy Fortress-heads who came along to advise and watch the inaugural episode on Twitch. It was a lot of fun (lower-case) and we overcame all the FUN (upper-case) that the game could throw at us (so far).

Cryptbeards Episode 2: The tradition of beating dangerous animals to death with bare dwarven fists continues.

Quote
Cryptbeards Episode 3: The migrants aren't coming! On the upside there haven't been any month long beatings dished out to the local wildlife. Be warned, I may have been at the ales when I recorded this. Also Linux gets discussed as though I know about it (I don't).

Cryptbeards Episode 4: Lots of Migrants this time, in fact more than I'm currently able to handle. What's that you say? Boring!? How about if we throw a were-lizard into the mix? Exciting enough for you? No!? Here, let me just beat this grizzly bear to death with my bare hands. Witness meeeeeeeeeee!

My stream is usually live Mondays and Fridays, starting somewhere between 2100 & 2200 GMT. For those of you with international inclinations here's a countdown to Episode 5
