bags and waterskins also wear out?
« on: February 10, 2015, 09:26:23 pm »

I noticed some xwaterskinx and xbagx. Maybe I once dropped them on a refuse stockpile by accident. But do those types of items wear out by themselves?

No.

The waterskin is dropped (when the dwarf is on refuse pile, in this case) when a new one is made. It is forbidden by default, so it won't be sent to proper stockpile. Strangely enough, the dwarf will not equip the new one! Instead, he begins to drink directly from barrel. I frequently claim waterskins during mass production.

edit: i have no idea how bag can make its way to refuse pile. Maybe it was thrown by an unhappy dwarf.

Well sometimes I just dump things on stockpiles. So maybe I made a mistake when selecting some seeds.

Actually this is the first time I saw worn bags.

Well I saw more worn items. Like ropes and raw cloth...
So maybe everything made from cloth will wear out in time?

I have a mace lord wearing xx+Bone Greaves+xx. Since I'm phasing out bone and leather anyway I haven't given much thought to it, but it's possible that Toady has implemented some proper item wear somewhere along the line that I missed

It's possible, but it's just as likely, if not more likely, that it ended up in a refuse stockpile somehow.

Everything is able to wear out as long as it lays on a refuse pile. Happened to me with a piece of armour.

I noticed some xwaterskinx and xbagx. ... But do those types of items wear out by themselves?

Yes. All plant- and animal-based items wear out at a rate of one wear level per 100 years. This wear can be accelerated significantly by extreme temperatures: items left outside in frozen biomes may wear out in a year or two.

The 'Wear' wiki page is quite comprehensive.

Like people already said, everything wears out when in a refuse stockpile. For clarification: every stockpile that has refuse enabled counts as a refuse stockpile. I once made that mistake when I had a quantum stockpile that accepted everything related to crafting, meaning raw materials (i.e. bones etc.) as well as finished products.

Yeah, consider my fort is 27 years old, I begin to see x everywhere.
I thought I could store those finished goods forever...
I gave some bins of goods for free to the caravans yesterday.

Nope. Only clothing, armor, and possibly refuse experience massively accelerated wear on refuse stockpiles. Bags (cloth and leather), wooden objects, glass objects, metal weapons, stone objects, and even fat globs do not.
