I'm assuming that anyone who creates a party for this year is interested in taking the next turn for now. Perhaps parties should be active until further notice to avoid having to declare intent every turn.

None of the migrants have any military skills aside from one novice dodger, by the way.

In other news, it's looking like you'll only be getting one dwarf each for this year unless the second migrant wave is a lot bigger than the first. We'll see how it goes during year two, but if we get no migrants we may need to abandon the political parties in favour of forcing as many of our dwarves as possible to get married.

The second post has been updated with the various political parties and their members. Those with no party can request to join one, found their own, or live a life of peace and harmony free from the mad world of dwarven politics.

I had claimed the metalcrafter before my party was established. Since the Miner was taken, well...

The only remaining unclaimed dwarf (I believe) is the spinner, if you want them.

From the diary of Komodo Shockpages, craftsdwarf:

As the ancients said, "divida et impera". Well, we've been scattered enough for goblins to rob us relentlessly, and now that green arsehole Uzol went even further. After disposing of all the old dwarven nobility, he's about to get rid of any potential rebels amongst the commoners. And here I am, Komodo Shockpages, beaten and shackled, riding this lil' wagon together with other poor folks and armed greenskins. For the whole road I've been sitting next to a troll, and I say, he smells worse then a pair of XXwool socksXX.

So, they got off the shackles, then tied me up and dropped me off somewhere in the wilderness. It was kinda warm outside, though the wind felt really weird... Anyway, after being escorted by a troll, lying on a beach all by myself was a pure pleasure, disregarding the fact some fell creatures were swarming right above me... Oh Armok, the bone birds! I was in trouble indeed.

That must have been my lucky day. A bunch of dwarves came in, swinging table legs and makeshift weapons, right before the birdies tried to peck me violently. The people hauled me to some hole in the ground they keep calling "Crownhammers" or something. After getting myself free from the rope and having a good cup of wine, I went to the see the overseer. Looks like they have some kind of colony here... Most of them are former politicians or cultists, and they even have parties here. Well, I might join one of those after I find a suitable job for me.

The spinner has been taken over by Aegir for now. I'll see if there are any combat orientated dwarves in the autumn wave.

Balor's Log, 8th of Limestone.
With Nobeard and a migrant by the name of Aegir looking after our farm plots in the upper levels, I don't think we'll need to worry about food for the time being. At Aegir's insistence, we're carving out space for a still in the workshop level. In the meantime, the roof for our compound is coming along nicely, so we shouldn't need to worry about zombie birds for the time being.

16th of Limestone.
A trade caravan has arrived, though there doesn't seem to be any outpost liaison to accompany them. My suspicions were correct. The king is attempting to cut us off as much as he can. Perhaps we're just another tribute to the elves or goblins and this entire place was a ruse for me as well.

24th of Limestone.
The workshops have finally been moved downstairs, though I guess there wasn't really much point now that they're not getting rained on any more. Oh well.

25th of Limestone.
Just before we finished the last section of the roof, a tiercel peregrine corpse swooped down on Aegir as she was gathering plants and set about tearing her face off. The caravan's hammerdwarves managed to put the thing down, but... well, the results aren't pretty.

On the lighter side, some extremely confused puppies have been spotted on out borders:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Alath Stukondumat eyed the fortress broker.
"With your trade goods such as they are, I can't fathom you ending up with so many goods," he said. Balor huffed, weighing what she'd requested against what she needed to take back to the fortress.
"Perhaps we could strike a better bargain out of the rain?" she suggested. The trader glanced up at the sky, nodded, and gestured towards his caravan. "I brought some of our local produce in case you wanted to talk more... privately," she added, producing a bottle of plump helmet wine as she noticed one of the guards attempting to follow her. Alath's expression brightened considerably and he waved the guard away.
"I'm fairly sure he's trustworthy, you know," he told Balor as the door swung shut behind them. She waved him away, listening intently for footsteps outside. Eventually satisfied, she seated herself in front of him.
"Fairly sure isn't good enough, Alath," she told him sternly. "I can already see our residents starting to fight among themselves. Raising the suspicions of our 'king' would be disastrous. What's the news in the capital?"
Alath opened the bottle of wine, taking a hearty swallow before answering. "The rumours that this place is intended to be a death sentence have been spreading like you thought they would. Rith thinks that it'll raise support for the rebel groups even more than before, but he's not sure how much that's going to help if he's supposed to be brutal and efficient enough to gain the goblins' trust."
"We've always know that the groups that don't serve our purposes have needed to be pruned out," Balor said softly. "With unrest growing, there will be more of them than ever before. Just make sure that the more useful insurgents are there to add the offenders to their cause once Rith is finished with them and we'll just continue getting stronger."
The trader nodded slowly, finishing another mug of wine. He was clearly trying to give voice to a thought that was giving him trouble. "Don't you think..." he said eventually. "Don't you think that manipulating people like this, offering up the ones that don't benefit us and making sure that the survivors join those that do... well, it's worse than the goblins in some ways, isn't it?"
Balor laid her hand on his arm, squeezing it gently. "We do what we've been forced to," she told Alath. "Once our nation has been freed from our oppressors, I will gladly answer for the wrongs I've done. But I will not stand idly by while a greenskin defiles our throne and sends our people to die in hells like this. I won't force you to continue aiding us if you think we're wrong, though."
"No!" Alath exclaimed. "Just... as long as the people know what we've done and why once this is all over."
"I promise," Balor said evenly. Though I'll probably be dead by then anyway, so it won't matter much to me, she added to herself.
"I really can't give you all those goods for what you have, though," Alath added apologetically. Balor nodded, pressing her lips together.
"We can make do with the metal, then," she decided. "I'm not risking having someone go insane because they have no iron to make an earring out of.

I've been frequenting this thread since the beginning, just to let people know I haven't abandoned the fort!  ;). I'm just waiting for the right party, I might make a new one once I start my dwarfs journal. (Which I will soon.) Anyway, good job guys!!

Can I get Dorf'd? Any soldier will do, once the fortress's military is started. Gender and civilian job don't matter. Preferably, I'd like to use a melee weapon, but any kind of melee weapon will do.

I wouldn't want any turns as overseer because my schedule has been busy lately and I've been trying to get a better computer for DF.

Can I give you the dwarf I'm putting in Insane's party? We have a bit of a dwarf shortage at the moment.

Balor's Journal, 3rd of Sandstone.
I've become somewhat uncomfortable with the number of bird corpses we have lying around, so I've begun construction of a corpse hatch where we can dispose of our unwanted nick nacks. Atir- Nobeard's friend- wants to try adding a device to compost the rubbish, and it seems like a good idea. Doubtless the smell would begin disturbing people eventually, or some meddling kids would find the place and start asking why we have a hatch for corpses at all.

In any case, another set of migrants have arrived. A lot more than I expected, to be honest. Apparently some of them are former insurgents who were liberated from one of Uzol's re-education camps and made their way here. They didn't seem particularly happy to see me, which was understandable, but I've managed to explain the situation (or a version of it that suits my needs while not giving any goblin spies anything to report) and I think we can all live in peace for the time being.

Migrants:
-Bembul Vabokkubuk (Farmer's Guild and Artist's Guild [metalcrafter]) (m)
-Urdim Abododdom (Farmer's Guild) (f)
-Sakzul Vudtharstinthad (Artist's Guild [gem setter]) (f)
-Bembul Abodonul (Farmer's Guild) (f)
-Tirist Rigothmadush (Wax Worker Militia recruit) (f)
-Endok Ralukkubuk (Fashion Police) (m)
-Momul Irolcog (Carpenter) (f)
-
One of the new guys tells me that he knows a little bit about military tactics, so I've given him the post of militia commander for the time being. Not that we have any weapons. Or armour. But it's a start! He calls himself Quartz, so I suspect that he's from the same place as Amethyst. I don't hold with naming children after gems, myself. Give me an Obsidian or Galena any day. I'm considering putting Taran into the new militia as well since he seems to have some experience with that spear of his, but on the other hand losing a carpenter would be somewhat detrimental to our growth at this stage.

5th of Sandstone.
Finally got the chance to look at Aegir again today. Amazingly, her eye seems to have fully healed in spite of the state it was in when she was rescued from the birds. The rest of her injuries seem treatable with only a few sutures and some dressing, so I think she got off luckily all in all providing you ignore the fact that she was mauled by a zombified bird.

9th of Sandstone.
I'm beginning to regret cutting down all of the trees close to the fortress. Had we spared the fruit bearing ones, we'd be able to profit from a decent arboretum, and walling it off would have ensured a safe supply of fresh food beyond what the fungus farms can produce.

15th of Sandstone.
Endok, our migrant leatherworker, has been refusing to leave his workshop. Witnesses claim that he's speaking in tongues and could be possessed by a demon or something, so I've decided to sacrifice a yak bull to the gods. If that doesn't sort out the problem, at least I'll have a few steaks to eat.

23rd of Sandstone.
Endok doesn't seem satisfied with the yak leather, so I've sent the militia out to kill the wolves that have been prowling around our borders recently. Doubtless our militia will get wiped out and the wolves will install themselves as our new leaders, but it's better to risk that than to allow Endok to go insane, wipe out our militia and install himself as our new leader.

Amethyst's journal

Another man from Quarrytown arrived today. His name is Quartz, which is a bit strange because it's a girl's name usually. I guess quartz is a common enough gem to almost be called a stone. I've been away from home a long time.

I've also set up a 2x1 statue hall to encourage the locals to socialize and hopefully get married fairly quickly so that we'll have some new additions to the workforce in... well in a very long time, but it's better than having only twenty one dwarves forever.
