Flash floods and flash fires
« on: February 25, 2015, 08:35:04 pm »

These would be !fun! natural hazards in any flat and dry area. Deserts and savannas can have both of these in the same season. Flash fires usually have a human cause, and I don't think a dwarven cause would be less likely. A flash flood may cancel out a flash fire, but it's not exactly a saving miracle. Nothing cancels a flash flood except solid civic engineering, and you can't ever be sure it's solid enough until it survives one.

Flash floods are significantly more likely to hit dry riverbeds, a day or so after it rains.  Granted, it can be easy to miss the signs of a dry riverbed if you don't know about them...

Banks on both sides, extra boulders, more vegetation near the banks than elsewhere.  Others?

This could be implemented as certain spaces on the edge filling with a certain volume of pressurized water every once in a while, similar to the river sources.

Both floods and fires are already in the game.  What distinguishes flash fires and floods from what is already in there.

Flash floods and natural wildfires have been suggested before, please search before posting suggestions.

All found by searching for "flash flood", I bet there are more flood suggestions besides.

Found by searching for "wildfire", again there will doubtless be more if you search using other terms for the same thing (forest fire, grass fire etc.)

I like the idea of natural disasters in general, each varying by embark site.  To use the OP's example, flash fires would occur in places that are very dry and have some vegetation to burn, whereas floods might occur in flat places with rivers.  Hurricanes would appear on coastal embarks, tornadoes in grasslands, and avalanches where you have mountains and/or snow.
