Iron cant pierce bronze colossus?
« on: February 26, 2015, 10:48:18 am »

Well i made an adventurer became a necromancer and then after killing a bunch of farmers found a shrine. I decided i would go there and fight the bronze colossus considering i had an iron axe. But when i attacked him every attack glanced off even when i threw things at him. I also tried with bronze weapons and it still glanced off.

Bronze collosi are huge. 20,000,000 size units, to be precise (about 286 times the size of a human). Each limb of that thing is going to be bigger than you and made entirely of bronze, which is substantially stronger than flesh and bone. I don't know exactly how combat physics work, but it seems that if an attack doesn't pass a certain threshold of damage it doesn't do anything. Since your pitting a comparatively tiny amount of iron against something like 10,000 pounds of bronze with every hit (about the weight of a bronze colossus arm or leg)... you're not doing anything. Even with steel it takes a long time to make any headway.

Bronze is roughly equal to iron anyway, as I recall.

Taking a quick look at the raws it seems to have better yield values, but worse fracture values. So it'll give a lot more before it breaks.

They are REALLY sharp with a weird velocity mod as I recall.. or is that just for throwing them... but yeah, even with a frickin masterwork candy battle axe it can take a few swings to take the head off of one if you aren't running around with something stupid like over 9000 strength.

Dwarf Fortress is a bit more complex than bronze < iron < steel < adamant. I'm not entirely sure about how exactly it works, but I recall reading that bronze weapons work better against bronze armor than iron weapons do, while iron weapons work better against iron armor than bronze weapons do. Steel and adamant is superior to both though.

Basically if your weapon have sharper edge (small contact area), it is easier to pierce the target.
So some times piercing weapons with a smaller tip is ridiculously efficient against tough enemy.

Try a piece.

And yes in general iron weapons can't kill bronze colossuses. You need steel.

Alternatively, you can throw fluffy wamblers at it.

Yeah, nothing like watching a bronze colossus get pinned down by 20+ severed hands.

Bronze colossi are pushovers to steel or candy artifacts. I had a human with a steel longsword hack a bronze colossi to bits without too much effort. Anything below that, you'll probably lose, unless you're a vampire or really high in endurance.
