Surprisepalace, The Rebirth!
« on: March 13, 2015, 11:57:41 pm »

Welcome to Surprisepalace! This is a succession fort (vanilla, 40.24) with just a bit a twist.

Embark location:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here are the two main rules that set Surprisepalace apart from other forts:

1) If your turn is coming up, you CANNOT read what is happening in the fortress.
2) With that in mind, ALL discussion of the fort MUST occur behind spoiler tags!

Yes, that's right! If you are intending to take a turn as overseer, you should go into it with NO information about the fortress! Or, at the very least, if you know you're going to take a turn, stop reading the spoilered posts of the person taking their turn before you. (We'll be working on the honor system here.)

"But wait," I hear you say, "if nothing is known about the previous turn, then each turn's story will have nothing to do with the continuity of the fortress as a whole; a villain one turn could be a leader or a pointless fool the next turn!" The answer to this query is: Yes. That is certainly something that can happen. The point is, there are many fine forts in the Community Games & Stories forum that have long-running stories. I just wanted to try something different with Surprisepalace, something perhaps a bit surreal.

Of course, not everything has to be concealed. Here are some examples of things that can be posted without spoiler tags:
Quote
-Spring has come on the calendar.
-No migrants made the trek to the fortress this season.
-The artifact didn't turn out really valuable at all.
-That was pretty cool.
-I think my turn will be over pretty soon.
-I would like a turn!
-I'd like to be dwarfed as a female soap maker.
-Urist McForumgoer has been dwarfed as a female cheese maker who dabbles in soapery, that's the closest I could find.
-I can't wait until the next overseer sees THAT!

Rules (pretty standard really)

-Turns last one in-game year, two real-life weeks, or until the overseer gives up, whichever comes first. Nothing wrong with having to abandon your turn, it happens; I just want to keep things moving. Speaking of which, if it gets time to be your turn and you don't respond in 48 hours, you may be skipped!
-Everyone uses DFFD to pass saves around so let's do that.
-Try not to kill the fort. Or its FPS.
-Try not to destroy the previous overseers' work. If goblin blood gets smeared all over a sculpture garden, okay. But don't just remove all the statues.
-Don't get all cheaty with utilities. Getting an overview of the dwarves' skills is fine; spawning magma on top of invaders is not.
-Try to leave a SURPRISE for the next overseers! What you want is something that will make them stop, stare and laugh.
Quote
GOOD IDEAS (maybe): Room full of puppies. Hall of levers that aren't actually connected to anything. Several dozen masterwork statues arranged to make the letters "WTF". Ordering a giant pointless wall to be built just before ending your turn. Renaming a dozen dwarves "Urist".
BAD IDEAS (definitely): Breaking into an aquifer just before ending your turn so the fortress secretly floods. Letting a forgotten beast loose from its cage. Throwing the fortress' food supply into magma. Renaming EVERY dwarf "Urist" (because then the next players feel bad about renaming them if they have an idea for a funny name).
-Thread readers can asked to be dwarfed. Which dwarfs get dwarfed is up to the overseers.
-How many times can I say "dwarf" before it starts to not look like a word any more?

Embark (for reals)

But they never would have given up either. And compared to sitting around in this prison for the rest of my life? Losing is fun.

I'm afraid I must combo break the line of agreement, I can't resist reading everything.

That being said, dwarf me as a metal/black/armor/weapon smith.

agile and with high willpower if possible.

Unsure if I'll be able to do a turn, but I would like to be a part of the fort as a citizen. Make me a clothier! The dwarves will never be sad about their clothing whilst I'M around!

The last succession fort I was in, I found one week to be...not enough. fortunately no one noticed

Anyway, that's why I set two weeks for this one.
