"Overseers orders. We are to gather here for an important announcement."

"Why, did you not pay an attention? The former Overseer had just announced it. She had just given her last orders as overseer, that we are to pull this lever over there,



which is connected to this support over here", the dwarf motions to the support that is holding up the floating platform suspended over the lip of the magma pipe.





"The former overseer has said that as long as we do so, we will be led to the Promised Land, and there will be plenty of ☼Moist Unicorn Rump Duck Egg Roasts☼ for everyone involved in the undertaking."

I looked over at EoyaBosan the Overseer, who was peering behind the safety of the green glass windows at the gathering of dwarfs.




I looked over at the lever. Under it was a label -
Drop them all into the magma sea! Muhahahahaha! - EB

"Uhhhh EoyaBosan?"

EoyaBosan gathers her breath and exhales on the glass window, and traces a crude smiley face on the fogged up window, before looking over at us and waving meekly, beaming brightly as she does so.

A dwarf to my right waves back and goes for the leve-

"Stop that! This is utter madness! Can't you read? Don't pull the lever!"
"Well of course not, none of us can read, have you ever gotten a formal education? No? Well neither have I! Look just because you wear that damn Overseer cap that has a natural +1 to Dwarvish Literacy, does not mean you can push us around you know-it-all twit."

"Wait what!? I am the overseer now?" I exclaimed.
"Well yeah, seeing as you have that damn cap over your head yeah."
"Er.. Well as overseer, my first mandate is to cancel that command to pull the lever then!" I bluttered out meekly.
"Well alright then, but we are still stuck on this damn magma platform." Said another dwarf to my left.
"I could use a drink." Whined another dwarf behind me.

Many other dwarves have gathered around the mayor, whom is doing his best to calm the dwarven folk and address all the complaints, but it is clear that he is overwhelmed without someone to maintain order.

"We need to find a way out of here, can anyone deconstruct the bridge?" I said as I motioned over to the drawbridge that has us sealed in.
"Um, no. No one can even reach the bridge."
"Well fuck. I'll need to think of another plan then."

Sensing that her plan was thwarted for the moment, EoyaBosan casually excuses herself for a drink.




Meanwhile...

"Well which lever is it?"

"I don't know, do I look like a mechanic to you? Besides, a good number of them are unlabelled." said Athel Gongithast.

I managed to locate Athel, whom was left out of the madness that is EoyaBosan's plan, using my new found overseer powers. Unfortunately, there is still much to figure out.

"Well just pull all of them then!" exclaimed one of many exasperated dwarf.
"Alright alright! I'm on it ok!? Sheesh calm down will you? I'm doing all the hard work here OK? What? Did a cavyboar crawl up your ass and die there?"
"JUST SODDING GET ON WITH IT!!!!"

EoyaBosan returns with some crundle meat to watch us squirm as we figure out how to get out.





"Do this Athel! Do that Athel! Hey, I'm not your servant." grumbled Athel under her breath as she attempted to locate all the levers in the fortress and pull them one by one.

Meanwhile... On the magma platform...

"Hey, there's another lever on the left here, I wonder what that does?"

With a heavy thud, the bridge lowers onto the platform.

"Ohhhh, so that's what that lever does. Why didn't anyone say something earlier?" I exclaimed in exasperation.
"Hey look here, none of us can read remember?"
"Oh."

"Alright! Nothing to see here, back to work!"
The dwarves shuffled off the platform and went about their business.

Following the aftermath of EoyaBosan's mad attempt to doom us all, we set about trying to stabilize the fortress. For some odd reason that no one can remember, many of the dwarves were haggard, and bent with stress. I suppose its time to right this ship. I was also informed that no migrants will ever arrive, EVER, due to some foul misdeed or other that no one remembers, caused by one of our long forgotten forebears whom shall not be named. Great. Well if Armok gives you forgotten beasts, then you just make ☼forgotten beast meat roasts☼.

So one of the dwarves came up to me today,
"Well Overseer. What shall we do?"
I gave him the evil eye, then pondered over the question in earnest.
"We shall make lots of block! lots and lots of lots of blocks! yes!"
"And what shall we do with the blocks?"
"Silence! I am the one in charge here! You shall all make blocks! I will decide what to do with them later!"

Can someone please resume with the training protocols for these damn birds?

Zulban has slipped into depression. I would be depressed too if I live in this hovel we call a fortress, we are barely even a village.

Giant Kea fly overhead, disrupting our operations outside, curse them! Thankfully, we have found some breaches in the roof due to this and we will be flooring those over. Some of them even made off with a wooden wheelbarrow and a stepladder.



Curse you! Wretched bird fiends!

Even more sad news, Sigun has succumbed to a bout of depression. I hope this is not going to be a re-occurring theme.



The Weretapir Anoth has come! Vucar Zasitsirab is caught outside and taken unawares, in mere moments, he is taken down.




27th Granite 256

The military arrive on the scene. Rakust crewedsalve is the first to engages but is beaten back, taking heavy damage to the neck.



Thankfully, Inod Robustcanyon arrives on the scene with the rest of the reinforcements and promptly subdue the foul beast.




I fear for the worst for Rakust. Not death, for that will be a mercy, but the horrors of the were-curse lurk. Meanwhile, even more dwarves slip into depression.




2nd Slate 256

I was alerted to a miasma outbreak in the kitchens. Just who was it that forbid the giant tick meat? I ordered the rotting remains dumped.



I have begun ordering the construction of yet another set of gates so as to deal with any woe begotten intruders that happen to wander in to the fortress. There shall be a rampart for crossbow dwarves to shoot from, and we shall seal of the entire courtyard just outside the trade depot, but THOSE
FUCKING INTERRUPTING KEAS ARE RUINING ALL MY PLANS! THAT IS IT!


5th Slate 256

Olin the Gemsetter has slain a Giant Kea. VENGEANCE! WE WILL HAVE VENGEANCE!




I noticed that we have a ARMOK DAMNED CATAPULT IN THE TREE TOPS, WHAT ARE WE? ELVES?




In the meantime, there are dwarves stuck in the tree tops. Yeah, by that's what you get for trying to emulate elves! I have no idea if they found their way there on their own, or if they were scared up the trees by the Giant Keas that are encircling the fortress like vultures waiting for prey to become carrion.

There are enraged Giant Keas chasing the construction crew all over the map -



- but we are not so easily cowed into submission. We will fight back with tooth and nail,




(this goes on for 10 pages or so.)



It is no wonder so many among the populace are feeling down in the dumps.

The Giant Keas and the elves have left. GOOD FUCKING RIDDANCE! Coincidence that they appeared and left at the same time? I think not! I think they are in cahoots.

After noticing that I stationed Rakust outside for quarantine, I decided that he passed the test. Just as he stepped into the fort -



The war dogs in the vicinity immediately pounced on him. Luckily there were also milita in the vicinity and they rushed to the scene. Poor Lor got both her lower arms torn off in the melee. In the end, we triumphed as Mafol the speardwarf stuck it to the former macedwarf.




Lor is in pretty bad shape.

Lor has awoken to find she has lost the use of both her hands.

In the meantime, the Gates are finally completed!! AHAHAHAHAHA!! Ahem. Phase 1 of the plan is completed. But there is yet more to do.

Datan Gingetur has begun a mysterious construction.

Morul is throwing a tantrum spiral, starting a fist fight with Athel, then trying to punch DemonicSpoon, only for DemonicSpoon to roll away with deft reflexes. DemonicSpoon is not amused.

Datan has created Sholidnursher - Clutchwaddle, a giant adamantine axe blade! It is worth 2.7 million urists worth of value. This will be an excellent addition to the additional defenses I am attempting to build.




In the meantime, I fear the dwindling population will doom us all eventually. The recent bouts of depression aren't a good sign either. I wonder if there is something I can do to alleviate the situation? Or are we doomed to a painfully slow death?

Damn it, I think you just jinxed it. I was just playing through summer when the game crashed. I got a data execution prevention error from windows. I hope this is just a one off occurrence because I got lots of stuff playing in the background taking up memory and not because the save is bugging out. Fingers crossed.

6th Hematite 256

I've made some minor changes all around, beginning with changing up the refuse stockpiles. I've designated a room to be dug out near the magma garbage disposal chute to store corpses that are classified as "sentient". Yes I know we dwarves are emotionally sensitive, that is why it would be better to have these creatures possessing of "noble intelligence" disposed of as hygienically as possible. Via magma cremation. Lest any of the more high strung dwarves get additionally stressed due to the presence of corpses. Dwarves are not included in the stockpile here though, we already have tombs for that. The old stockpile will mainly handle bones, shells and such of non-sentients. It would be a good idea to manually designate these sentient corpses to be cremated (dumped) via magma to ensure that the stockpile does not completely fill up. But we have bigger problems to solve.




I have also decided that we need to get as many of our populace paired off and married in order to combat the migration ban. I might need to take some liberties with job assignments and such, but the chosen few will take a few months/ years off all job assignments in order to better know their partners. I have converted some of the smaller bedrooms into marriage suites for such a purpose with 2 beds in a room instead of one. For this purpose I've decide to outlaw parties and meeting areas. Why? Because I can that's why. Of course, I've volunteered myself as the first test subject. Just to be safe. 




I've also begin culling the animal population before it gets out of hand. Already the dogs are producing litters of puppies as well as the pigs. I've had most of them gelded.

Next up is military. I've assigned some advanced uniforms to go around, though the military will have to make do with they have for now. I've also begun a round of upgrading military gear. Silver maces and warhammers for all! I've set our legendary weaponsmith to work to produce some high quality wares. We need every advantage we can get.




We've garnered a few facts about giant kea training. Perhaps we can apply our newfound knowledge of these pesky foes and turn it against them?

I'm encouraging more mining in order to get access at the limonite veins, so I've assigned the miners to dig out a new kitchen.




The human traders have turned up for trade. I shall make use of the opportunity to get rid of the trash wares that we have accumulated over the years.




I just noticed we don't have any soap, how ever did we stout and filthy dwarves manage to survive? I'm going to get that shit kick started. Bubbly baths for all!

We traded a large amount of expensive (read: useless) crafts for a bunch of food supplies and iron supplies to melt down to fuel our fledgling steel industry.


17th Hematite 256

Eritzap is re-elected mayor. I doubt there will be any competition any time soon.




9th Malachite 256

We have attained a general familiarity with Giant Kea training methods. So what have we learnt? Well, for one, I've heard Giant Keas taste great.





We don't have a justice system in place do we now? No wonder these dwarves have been under a lot of stress lately. Its because of this sword of damocles called the "inept dwarven justice system" that is hanging over them, threatening to disrupt their livelihoods.



The new kitchens are now fully excavated! I'll have it clear of debris and operational by the end of the year if all goes well.




4th Galena 256

The shooting complex is complete! Enemies will now have to answer to our (as of yet non-existent) crossbow dwarves, I'll see what I can do to enlist some dwarves into the squad but we are strapped for dwarfpower as it is. I've leveled and roofed over the "orchard" outside and utilized the space to connect to the newly built tower. The former orchard is now a training complex for new crossbow dwarf recruits.





Looks like I've spoken too soon. The giant keas have returned. One of them infiltrated the newly built archery tower. By the beard of Armok! Why can't these giant birds just leave us alone for once!




I've dispatched the military to deal with these nuisances of nature.





Vengeance is a dish best served with a healthy topping of MURDER. Damn birds just don't learn their lesson.

With the blessings of our benevolent ancestors, Nil has undertaken a spirit quest to purge the fortress of the foul Giant Kea threat.
 

Autumn has come.

Not much of any consequence happened, as can be expected. I don't feel much inspired to contribute beyond the simple defensive schemes and general improvements so pretty much that's just what I did. Well at least I can say the fort isn't going to keel over and collapse under my watch any time soon.

Autumn is already done and should go up within the next few hours. I shall have Winter done soon as well and the save up by Wednesday or Thursday.

I ordered the mass slaughter of puppies, cause I simply love those cuddly adorable balls of furry cuteness. The young and tender puppy meat is such a delicacy!

The human outpost liaison has arrived. Wait what? Oh so, we do have a human employed under the dwarven empire then. For a moment there I thought the human trade caravan paid us another visit.






Its bothering me that the cage traps out front are preventing the wagons from entering the trade depot, so I'm having them removed and relocated to the route between the trade depot and the fortress proper.





Meanwhile, the mayor conducts a diplomatic meeting with the outpost liaison, but there are no new developments from the mountainhome.
 




I'm ordering 4 bins worth of leather, a bin each of silk cloth and plant cloth, some assorted weapon grade metal bars and various iron ores and flux. This will be useful down the line to fortify our armory supplies and weaponry, though we have plenty of ore here that has yet to be utilized. This is the export agreement.





With that, we bid the outpost liaison farewell and safe journey.

We traded for all the precious metal bars that the former overseer presumably ordered. As well as the barrels of lye, steel and iron supplies to melt down. In return, the traders got more than their fair share of spiked wooden balls. We had too much wood to spare just lying around anyway.

Nil has begun locked himself in the craftsdwarf workshop. Rumor has it that he is working on some mysterious construction that will allow him to converse with the very spirits themselves. We shall soon see...

Snail was frightened today by the moaning spirit of one Erush Kibtaron, a ghostly furnace operator.





I've gotten Than402 II to engrave a memorial to Erush to sate the dead's need to be memorialized.

Nil Kibked has created Omerngobol - The Green Glumness, a pecan wood figurine of Enthep Tonedran! Pretty, but not very functional I'm afraid, though Nil insists that it will be a hit with the kids. An action figurine with movable limbs he calls it. Also, apparently functions as a conduit to communicate with the dead. I gave him a skeptical look, but decide to just humor him, remarking that, "I'm sure it will be a hit with the folks back at home."

We have captured a giant cave spider! Unfortunately it has come at a cost, 2 of our dwarves have given their lives in an unfortunate scuffle with the beast. They were corralling the dogs that were left in the caverns for some reason or another for butchering, unfortunately they got hindered in their task just a few urists away from the entrance. But for now, we have a new pet to play with. I'll let the next overseer decide what to do with this new addition to our petting zoo, too busy dating.

We've recovered the bodies of Asen Litastsid and Morul Rakustkosoth. With that, I've ordered the first caverns sealed shut once again.

I've begun the conversion of our military to full steel armor, it might take some time for the orders to process though, with the shortage of steel. I'm having our furnace operators and smiths work around the clock to get the orders right.


5th Moonstone 256

I've ordered all the food supplies in the old kitchen to be moved to the new kitchen. Also, dismantling the stockpiles there. In the meantime, I've had the cooks try to cook up some roasts.







19th Moonstone 256

I was alerted to the news that Doren Nunokcog is taken by a fey mood and has claimed a mechanic's workshop.






2nd Opal 256

Doren has begun working furiously on a mysterious construction!




6th Opal 256

Doren has created Tunurosir, Styledtruthful, a marble mechanisms. Again, another striking example of craftsdwarfship, adorned with well worked motifs concerning our civilization - the Fences of Cremating.






3rd Obsidian 256

Sound the alarm! Giant Keas sighted! The first bird is dealt a quick death at the hands of our speardwarf.




The other fights a drawn out engagement with several dwarves and a few war dogs before being cut down to size.







Another swoops at the bedrooms and accosts a young dwarven child.






Young Imish succumbs to the Giant Kea menace.




Meanwhile, Zulashvucar: killer of dwarf children, strikes out at the other dwarves in the living area. Things do not turn out well for the old bird, as the war dogs that roam the fortress descended upon her. A pick to the skull finished the menace for good.






Another Giant Kea swoops in near the barracks and is promptly dealt with in swift fashion.






Unfortunately, to add insult to injury, the remaining Giant Kea makes off with one of our wheelbarrows.




You may have made a mockery of us! But we shall feast on the flesh of your brethren!





7th Obsidian 256

The fighting has finally died down. Few are happy about the current state of affairs.





I've ordered a hatch to be built and forbidden on the damn tower to the catapult in the trees.




Seems this was where the Giant Keas descended from, taking a direct route into the fortress. Despite what some of the older residents say, I don't think its a watchtower, or some farm in the sky. Instead I believe its an Armok damned Giant Kea ticket to a dwarven buffet.


15th Obsidian 256

Certainly this Sodel here is a dwarf that recognizes and appreciates good craftsdwarfship.




Sodel is also a fine example of dwarven martial prowess.






27th Obsidian 256

I grow weary of all this fighting, I don't really care anymore. When I got started on this thankless job, I just wanted the fortress to do well, and for the citizens to be happy. But things have changed. I've found a new goal in life. As such, I've decided to resign from my position of overseer and leave it up to the populace to nominate another more capable candidate. As my last act as overseer, I have designated an area to be dug out that will serve as my new abode. Soon I shall retire to my new chambers, already I can hear the apple of my eye calling.

Be sure to lower pop cap to be less than the current pop, lest migrants crash the save.

Ok everything is up now. Took some time to edit stuff, as I didn't know you can resize images on the forum itself. I've contacted PyroTechno whom I believe is next in line as Overseer.
