B L I T ZB A L L


Intro - Original Pastey
Blitzball is a team sport played in a spherical underwater arena. Six players on each side aim to control the blitzball and kick it into the opposing goal. Players on the opposing side can tackle the ballholder to wrest control onto their side. Players can alsopass the ball amongst one another to move the ball downfield or avoid tackles. The Goalkeeper defends the goal from shooters. Games take place over two 10 minute periods surrounding a halftime interval where players have time to rest and recover from injuries.

The aim of this system is to recreate the game of Blitzball as seen in Final Fantasy X/X-2 in the fashion of a tabletop game. Players can manage whole teams or take control of individual players competing for cash prizes and world renown.

You should run this on the forums, complete with drowning characters.

Unfortunately, it's not ready to run just yet. Character creation is still incomplete, as well as the leveling system. We'd like input on that from anyone who has ideas for us.

This looks pretty damn cool!  What about fouls?  If I "accidentally" mistake an opponent's head for the ball will I get a red card or something?

As it is, fouls are impossible to commit, since tackling is only possible against the ball carrier.

Yeah 3D movement would just be far too complicated to simulate and considering the goal is flat and must be approached from the front, there's no real advantage to swimming above or below the opposition, but you could probably assume that during breakthroughs the players dodge below and above their opponents.

You made an account just to necro this topic? I don't really mind, but why? How'd you find this?

Not very far, I wasn't satisfied with the 3D representation of the play so I kind of lost interest (it's funny because I just did a bunch of research on how to represent 3D gamespace with a 2D interface and some of that could be relevant if I ever returned to this), and the stats that BMM42 recovered from the real game are really convoluted and not really fair. For anyone who wants to do something like this, definitely just start over and make up your own brand new system, don't base it directly off the game.

Edit: Also I just read through the OP and there are passages that are incomplete or where the math is wrong, so I can't even say this is a faithful explanation of the rules of Blitzball in FFX/FFX-2. IIRC some of our choices are ones we made up too
