I am a Mayday user and have been since the start. Oh sure i can play without tiles but it hurts my eyes, and tiles are far more explicit than ascii.

Scrub ? What ? I started this game back in 40d and magma IS my favored method of solving problems.

That or sending the military.

A controller is immediately casual despite keyboard superiority (in this instance, I am not a proponent of the "PC master-race"...).
I'll accept punch cards. I will also accept a keyboard's frayed wire, good luck connecting the data wires to VCC and ground fast enough to be translated into a key. Although, maybe we can write a driver to turn a theremin into a keyboard...

Ah, but the controller doesn't have as many buttons, meaning that you have to map several functions to the same button, automatically making them hardcore.
Keyboards are for filthy casuals, obviously.

For the semi-hardcore players out there, there is always [print_mode:basic] played in the UNIX shell. It is halfway between Monoscii and Default. Bonus points for SSH and gratuitous use of shell features (piping into cat, etc.).

Finally some graphical version small enough to fit on those Monochrome mobile displays (like Nokia 3310's 84 × 48 pixel pure monochrome one).
