Additional tasks for soldiers
« on: March 31, 2015, 05:24:21 am »

Currently, the only purpose for soldiers is to beat the ever-loving crap out of the goblins, elves, and other things. But in real life, soldiers have many other tasks too. I know that some of those won't fit into the current shape of DF but there are some that do.

Examples:
- Escort civilians to places where they need to go, defending them if needed (much like assigning war bears to soldiers) Refer to this post I made earlier for a more in-depth description.
- Find dwarves in danger and take them to a safe place. Example: A crippled dwarf who just got his crutches and has almost no experience in crutch-walking is outside when a goblin siege arrives. It would be faster if a soldier carried him inside.
- Retrieve certain important items that are in a dangerous place. Socks must never fall in hands of the goblins.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

I've got mixed feelings about this idea.

On one hand, modern soldiers are almost nothing like medieval warriors; the former often conduct humanitarian work as a result of Nationalist training. But the latter were basically either rich bullies that could afford their own armor by robbing peasants or else cowardly conscripts that couldn't be relied on for more than one or two waves. Neither was likely to go off on a rescue mission unless the rescuee was of the Nobility- and even then it was far more likely that they'd live anyway since the invaders would be looking to capture them for hefty ransoms. Other than that- it was every man for themselves during war.

On the other hand, that's just a human perspective, since DF dwarves have much more pristine morals and ethics (From the modern, Western perspective at least) it might just be probable that they would embark on rescue missions. So I don't know.

I agree there should be at least a follow command.

I would add:

Run (or do now!) to station or kill orders, they just walk half map and the enemy runs away, or they arrive too late
Disarm/Capture enemys, the primary objetive its to let all enemy unconscious then (?) carry them to prison? idk
Regroup, all dwarf belonging to a team try to get closer to protect themselves, or protect the most wounded teammate

How about pre made formations (turtle, späckad, Gå–På etc) or procedurally generated ones, unique to a civ and adapted to the enemies and terrain they fight in in worldgen.

Or you could just let the children roam free and natural selection will take care of them.
I'm now picturing an elf wrestler trying to suplex my battlements.

It's all planned for that ever elusive army arc.
