Torak's computer has been ressurected and given 100% He
« on: April 01, 2008, 02:38:00 pm »

Alright, major problems here.

Last night, I was playing Baldur's gate 2, just found the Bounty Hunter guy, and BAM, computer's off, lights are off, my entire room is off. Ends up my brother was screwing with the Breaker box trying to get his downstairs room on, but fucking me and half the house up. Normally, this is fine and good, I fix whatever he did and go on, but when I turn on my computer I get baraged with errors, before I even log on:    (With about 2-6 others like it, varies on startup)

This does not worry me as much as the length of time it takes for the computer to startup (about 10 minutes after I put my password in, explorer starts up). It is also slow, very, very slow. Im talking Windows '95 slow.

Another big issue is the sound, not getting any regular system sounds (only those beeps from the harddrive, the sounds you cant turn off). Being as savvy as I am, I figured it was Windows Audio acting up, so I ran services.msc and tried to start it up, it goes along slowly, just crawling along, only to get this:

See now that is a major issue, I can handle a slow computer, but without sound (and therefore music) I am pretty much doomed to losing my mind.

Is there anything that I can do to fix this (I've already tried system restore, and it tells me to restart and try running it again, something along the lines of "System restore cannot protect your computer at this time")?

Also, Im thinking it may be a virus, but it's unlikely because viruses dont usualy start working after your power goes off.

Just buy the most powerful magnet you can find and rub it on your CPU.

Oh damn. That sounds pretty bad. I hope somebody more knowledgeable drops by, but until then...
(Edit: Implying that I have little idea as to how to correct those problems and I hope somebody else helps instead. Need to sleep more, not making sense.)

What operating system are you running? I'm assuming XP.
Does this happen every time you boot? Since you said it varies on startup, I'm also assuming yes.

Did you try to boot in safe mode? Is your computer on a surge protector? The first error box is the most curious. If the memory can't be read... well, I hope that doesn't mean the RAM is damaged. As for the audio service not starting, maybe that's related to the RAM. Or something on the hard-drive got corrupted?

I've never seen anything like this before. Ack.

Edit: Hahah, Toady. I think one of my friend's kids caused computer damage with a magnet. Well, it was that or the chocolate milk they poured inside.

Edit^3: Oh. I see what you did there.

you have more than one computer? if so just take out the HD(they need to both be running on the same operating software) and slave it to your other computer then reinstall WXP or what ever you running on that HD and that should fix any problems what apps where you running and Baldurs gate 2 being an old game might have left behind a corrupt cache or some retarded thing that's crippling your system hope that help =) btw to slave take the pin selector on the hardrive and look at its label it will tell you witch position the pin selector should be in =) hope that helps if not just pm me

I do not have any other desktop computers running XP, only a laptop.

Uh...the only fun part about a crapped up unfixable computer is that you can (physically) destroy it in many different ways.

I've seen similar to this happen before. Your ram got fried. Possibly the sound card too.  What happens is that it reads up to the bad sector on the ram and then doesn't go farther. You get stuck with a limited amount of ram. Check your system resources and see if the ram displayed is the same as it always was.
