There is a beast down there that has dust that is lethal within a few seconds, not sure what the actual mechanism is there since they die too fast for any medical symptom to show up.

We forgot them in the first years, so there's no real dwarven story (yet).


The cavern dwelling beast is bound to be one of the first antagonists however, since it manages to food-poison Overseers.
This aggression will not stand.

Blood. Blood everywhere. The well feeds directly from a rotting wrestler corpse. The sky pours elf blood to the joy(?) of many.

SPRING

Granite
Seeing as everything is already fleshed out and built, my first order to keep the fort running seems to be to fulfill our needs for iron (EVERYONE EVER cancels smelt: no hematite!) Some quick combs through the first cavern's rock body yield enough to fulfill the previous Overseer's orders, along with tetrahedrite to keep the silver statues coming. Some newly-bred troglodyte spawn are first learning to climb, and breaking their legs along the way. The glory of spring. A few thieves showed up, but ran north when they were spotted. Mostly uneventful month (the year is still young).

Slate
"Some migrants have arrived." Huzzah.
A few of the weaker-willed broke down crying upon entry, which was funny in its own way. Those experienced in weaponry have been drafted, and their animals have been slaughtered. We now have a population of 101.
The Forgotten Beast (whose name literally means Hateful Hole, go fig) is doing a great job at keeping the general vermin out of the pond. No skull seems to be able to take the force of its kick and remain intact.
And then, just when everything was settled down:
 
Thankfully, that outcropping goes nowhere.
A lonely ghost, one of the unfortunates to be sent against the HateHole, was put to rest… and immediately replaced by yet another spook. Such is life (or death… or whatever you call it). The new one will be ignored for now. Sleeping areas for the migrants have been laid out, and a craftsdwarf's workshop is being used by a possessed dwarf.

Felsite
And the result of the strange mood is… just a granite ring!
Moving on!
As all-natural, non bloody rain begins to fall, another poor crocodile encounters the terror in the lake. With some quick dodges, however, the creature escapes. After shimmying along the shoreline, it runs off the map, carrying with it a deep-seated fear of feathers.
After realizing that the beast had at last found a resting spot, I attempted to give orders to drop a small piece of the ceiling onto the thing. However, the sequence in which the orders were given was imperfect, leading to one of the miners getting breathed on/into and perishing in the common area. Thankfully, the beast did not attempt to pursue them further into the fort, but after losing its sightline, merely slithered back into the water.

SUMMER

Hematite
Not one to give up with a single death, I continue to send miners in to channel out the dropzone, but due to some stupid flaw in their pathfinding they would constantly take a path that would make the beast notice them. The thing has to climb a few z-levels to reach them, though, so the scared dwarf can just run like hell (oh yeah, did Toady make panicked dwarves move at extremely high speeds or something with the recent updates? they can HAUL ASS now).
The yearly human caravan arrives in good spirit; I trade some high-quality rock pots and silver crafts for cheap meat, milk, and fish. More variety in the fortress diet is always a good thing, no one can tell me otherwise.
In an attempt to keep a clear trade route open against the constant growth of saplings, I decide to have a wooden road to the west built. More armor is to be forged, more silver is needed for the production of good value furniture.

Malachite
As the road nears completion, the ghostly wrestler from before spooks one of the children bad. A slab is quickly carved and set, allowing him to pass on. The Hateful Hole is surprisingly docile, considering its earlier reputation. I'm leaving the issue of killing the thing for another time, or another overseer.
Yet another comical moment, this time among the guard:

Any dwarf can bite. Only the great can bite while knowing what they're doing.
A smaller migrant wave comes, about 7 this time. One of their pet ducklings somehow ends up in a tree after slaughtering orders are given. The dwarves are processed and integrated, as usual.

Galena
After threatening to hack down the chick's tree, it flies down and is immediately brought to the butcher's block. More meat for all.
To occupy the time, I begin to organize the cleanup of the debris throughout the fortress. There're rocks everywhere. Taking up space in the stockpiles, sitting in the halls, jamming doors open. Everywhere. To future overseers: please bulk dump after hollowing out a room! It looks much cleaner and causes less problems.
Success is being found below-ground! With some wall construction to block undesired miner paths, the weaponized cave-in is nearing completion.

FALL

Limestone
No time to focus on petty thieves when the my goal is so within reach. Only a few more tiles now… dwarven caravan grabs my attention, I trade for more food and other potentially useful items.
I give the order for the final supporting floor square to be destroyed. The miner recruit who takes the job walks with purpose to his destination. He swings his pick… and the piece of floor, now a deadly projectile moving with the speed of gravity, smashes directly over the Hateful Hole's vile head. As the dust clears, a single flashing red B lies in its own blood. He is slain.
I allow entry to the caverns once again, and the few bodies on land are gathered for entombment. Many remain buried beneath the water, however. A giant olm and a cave croc decide that right then is the proper time to make an appearance, but both are decimated by the second squad's weaponry. Funny thing: as the crocodile was getting beat to death, the outpost liaison wandered in looking for the mayor. Upon seeing the thing down on the floor and unconscious, she joined in on the beatdown.
After the crocodile finally expired, the liaison had her meeting and extended the offer of a barony to our humble fort. I promote Blegh to the role, and begin constructing new rooms for our new noble's needs. The trade agreement led to a large desire for ammunition, coal, and blocks for next year. That matter of business settled, the liaison and the mayor part ways.
A possessed fish cleaner takes over a mechanic's workshop as I fill the last tile of the tombs with a coffin. The next guy in line will have expand those.

Sandstone
Our fair fisherman has created Flushedenjoy the Saturnine Requirement, a granite mechanism. Why it ended up being called that is anyone's guess. Another small migrant wave puts our population at 118.
Meanwhile, a great mystery abounds. Cat after cat is being found inexplicably dead, all throughout the fort. No reports of conflict, just a body surrounded by blood, found by a passing dwarf. It might be a syndrome, but if that were the case, my dwarves would be dying too. Is it cat-specific? Is there somewhere only they go? I decided to track a kitten for a few minutes, in hopes of catching the killer. And catch them I did. As the kitten trotted towards the refuse pile, it was suddenly struck down. The culprit: a honeybee. Bees have been stinging my cats, and because of their small size, the stings have been fatal. Case closed, go home. If someone intends to use cats for meat later on, genocide or control the honeybees.
Somehow a baby troglodyte makes it up the steps into the fortress general, and because of a full refuse stockpile, rots away within the stairwell. It was dealt with, but I'd like it not to happen again.

Timber
After realizing that the second squad did not actually have their training area, I began to give orders for the creation of a second floor of the guard tower. Huge success. Perhaps the next guy in line could use the area directly below the tower as a sleeping area/coinstar room. I've already queued up the beds for it, so knock yourself out.
With winter coming on fast, the leaves begin to fall from the trees around the fort. Their color makes me think that the blood has begun to fall so thick that it comes in chunks, but I am mistaken.
While thinking of the bizarre weather around our fort, I come up with an idea. Would it be possible to construct a gigantic funnel, which we use to gather the falling blood, and then have that funnel be floodgates to a drowning chamber? Excessively dwarfy, and definitely a thing that I would build given the time.

WINTER

Moonstone
In the interest of condensing and making useful all those freaking copper bars we have next to the magma forges, I've decided to begin a massive block-making. With this, the possibility of a blood funnel or a humongous metallic tower grows nearer. Also, the merchants will love the stuff.
An incredible series of events: the mayor, deciding to clean the bloody cavern floor, was walking down the stairs to the caverns (which are right alongside the shaft for the well), when he suddenly encountered a giant toad. Either by dodging or by being thrown in, he ended up falling straight down the well-shaft, and began drowning in the bloodied waters, surrounded by the year-old corpses of the old militia. Panicking and surrounded by death, he flailed in the water until the toad followed him in, ripping open his head.
MOMENTS LATER:
"Iden Melbilrit, miner, has been elected Mayor."
"I won the election. Fantastic!"
With the lake and its denizens having claimed so many lives, I decided to try and drain the whole damn thing. Piercing the northmost edge of the lake, the water bursts out of its pool, and flows right out of the map. The miner assigned the piercing job swam with surprising force against the current, making it through the breach and reaching the shore a few z-levels up. Upon piercing the stairwell-side edge of the lake, many of the bodies (and a very confused toad!) were pushed by the water into reach. More burials are underway, and the armor and weapons of the deceased military are being repurposed.

Opal
I would just like to apologize up front about the FPS burden that my fooling has created. Constant water flow is not beneficial for those with older computers, and I'm sorry. On the other hand, we have a swimming practice area for those unfortunate enough to be stuck down there. The whole north wall is fortification, so there shouldn't be any flooding problems. But with the surfacing of the bodies, decomposition has finally begun. No miasma has reached the fort proper. Yet. A few of those commissioned to carve the fortifications are trapped by the excessive amounts of water pouring in. I've sent some miners to dig them a brand new staircase.
After getting the stonecarvers out, I decided to open another hole in the lake. As a result, however, another 3 dwarves ended up dead by drowning. I confess that this incident was entirely my fault, as I was not expecting such an incredible rush of water. The project was completed nonetheless.
Even with the irresponsible drowning deaths, at least we've got an artifact cave spider vest: Anguishedjaw the Rampage of Grizzle.

Obsidian
With my turn coming to an end, I decided to finish with a bit of exterior decoration. Another road leading east is constructed, slick with blood and vomit just like everything else. The constant sunsickness is discouraging and slowing, though. I would like it if we could incorporate a sunning area later on, or maybe let some sunlight into the stairwell, to improve adaption.
As I feared, FPS is tanking. Hopefully my successors can find a way to fix my foolishness.

As spring arrives once more, I take my leave. Leaftin is quite different from anything else I've played in the past, and that's okay. It has yet to become something of legend, but that's a task for those who follow.
