Urist's Ark - taking suggestions before launch
« on: April 17, 2015, 05:41:46 pm »

I'm developing a new mod - Urist's Ark, adding creatures, creatures, creatures (and perhaps stone, clothes and other stuff). I would like some suggestions of what animals YOU would like to see in Dwarf Fortress.

Current Animals:
Baboon - a dangerous little beast who can kill a dwarf. They are quite territorial.
Asian Elephant - a smaller elephant.
African Elephant - the current elephant with its name changed.
Roseate Spoonbill - a large bird with a strangely shaped bill (rather like a spoon, obviously).
Domestic Pigeon - a domestic bird with gray feathers. It's clutch is smaller but their eggs are larger than chickens. Their meat is also more valuable (as well as bone and leather, as I can't find a way to make only their meat more valuable).
Scarlet Macaw - large red parrots.
Blue Macaws - extremely rare, very valuable blue parrots.
Bison - a large hairy cow-like creature. Rather like a buffalo, but you can wash your hands in it.
Blue-Footed Booby - a type of booby (*giggles*) that has blue feet. Basically, a cooler seagull.

Current Vermin:
Lemmings - little fat hamsters that live in the arctic and (don't) dive off of cliffs.
Mantis Shrimp - nasty little creatures that can spear prey with a claw. Don't let them near mutagen or radiation.
Stickleback - a fish with spines on its back and a red belly.

I don't think calling an animal asian/african is appropriate since there is no asia/africa. Otherwise, seeing more domestic animals would be cool.

Yes. +1. And the proper one, not the mangy dog edition.

Well, I was looking for real animals... but, hell, why not!

BTW, its name means goat sucker. *titters immaturely*

Personally, I prefer the version Wikipedia uses as the primary illustration for their article.

This guy needs to be included, and it should not be vermin. Not unless you can give vermin the ability to shatter bone or something.

I really want a moat filled with these, you see.

I've heard that they're pretty intelligent too, capable of learning tricks and puzzles, so I would suggest giving them [CAN_LEARN] with low [SKILL_LEARN_RATES].

There's a [SLOW_LEARNER] token which sets all [SKILL_LEARN_RATES] to 50.

Iguanas, Sea Iguanas, Herons/Egrets (plus Giant Dwarf-Eating herons), Snow Leopard, Anteater, Fox Bats.  If the game has a way to do prehensile tails, spider monkey and tamanduas could be interesting.

More Giant Animals too, like Giant Fox, Giant Raccoon, Giant Armadillo, Giant Gorilla, Giant Elephant, etc. and Giant Vermin, like Giant Two Legged Rhino Lizard, Giant Pond Turtle or Giant Blue Jay.

Pro Tip, Baboons are smaller versions of Mandrills, which DF already has, so no need to build them completely from scratch.  Giant Baboons would also be cool.

I don't think calling an animal asian/african is appropriate since there is no asia/africa.

Forest Elephant and Plains Elephant.  There are also Pygmy Elephants.

This guy needs to be included, and it should not be vermin. Not unless you can give vermin the ability to shatter bone or something.

That's what GIANT Mantis Shrimp is for.  It is terrifying.

And as I prowl around the wiki, this pops up:  http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Modification:Ark_Project

If I was doing it, I would mod in a bunch of post-dinosaur prehistorical animals.  Some of the game's Giant Animals actually existed, like the Giant Sloth and Giant Monitor Lizard anyways, so I wouldn't feel weird about it.

I'm developing a new mod - Urist's Ark, adding creatures, creatures, creatures (and perhaps stone, clothes and other stuff). I would like some suggestions of what animals YOU would like to see in Dwarf Fortress.
Feel free to take some of my animal additions from OldGenesis mod.

I have Forest Elephant, Dama Gazelle, spaniel, bulldog, mastiff, swamp cat, Dodo bird, marsh owl (fictional amalgam of N owl species), Fisher marten, Zebra, Eland the cowlike antelope,
boa, python, softshell turtle (plus its large version), spearnosed bat,
haddock (super tasty fish, triple price), and probably some more that I added before master Toady added 200+ new animals.
