Dota 2 had less than 5/10 on Metacritic after the Diretide fiasco.

Wow, that's really impressive. Go gamers.
Ah, so when a company does something unacceptable, we shouldn't use every available tool to push back! I understand now, but I still have one question: after we sit back and let game companies do whatever they want without protest, should we complain on tumblr about being oppressed?

I predict that in 5 years companies will start selling patches for money and will call anyone who wants them for free "entitled".
Subscription model. Microsoft's been experimenting with this for a while, and there's been speculation Windows 10 might require a subscription for full features. If it works out for business software, game publishers will try copying the model (completely ignoring that they've already tried the model with MMOGs).

That's very sad. Subscriptions for just basic shit. Y'know, flash and adobe went subscription recently, and I was extremely saddened.

this is mostly a post to watch the shitstorm post but I might as well post in my stance.  Just incase some loonie decides to use bay 12 as some kind of secret polling ground.

Modders should be able to be paid for their work if they desire.  But if it requires another mod to work, even if the legaleze says it's free to use in other works a fair and reasonable modder should attempt to obtain explicit permission to use it in a sold product.  There's no law that says you must, but there's also no law that says you have to hold a door for folks in a wheelchair at a restaurant it's just something most respectable people would do.

But steam, at least with their current implementation of this system, really should not be doing this.  Steam doesn't seem the least bit interested in policing this kind of thing, and I don't think they would be willing to assist when a person suspects a copyright claim.  Like someone said before, when the mods were free as a mod maker you could just download it to see if it's a copy.  Now you have to pay someone else just to see if it's a copy, and if it is you probably won't get your money back unless you want to pursue legal action (and that's IF the scammer was successful in getting that first $100) and that's more money down the tube.  Yea you can sue for legal fees too, but the court needs paid, often before you see anything yourself.  And the whole time Valve and beth profit.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate valve.  There are worse companies out there, and attempting to make money is hardly a cardinal sin.  But I really don't think they thought this through.  And I hope it fails, valve pulls it soon, or they drastically change how they are doing it, because as others pointed out, this is just fostering all kinds of distrust. 

A good paid system wouldn't scare the free modders into taking their stuff down in fear of theft.  This is not a good system.

If Valve wanted to make this actually work, they would not have done a literal conspiracy stuff like NOT ANNOUNCING THIS AT ALL before implementing.

They knew that people would refuse this if they announced it.

The mere existence of a paywall system is detrimental to the community. Mod access shouldn't be restricted. They're supposed to be enjoyed by everyone.
This is without mentioning the terrible practices and atmosphere money will introduce into the community. There's already division.

You want money? Donations it is. No further.

Everything doesn't have to be monetized and it saddens me to see people cheering on the mere idea of monetization. Capitalism isn't always the answer.

This has also probably been said before too... lesse.... hm, can't find a good quote.  Oh well.   Don't want to buy a mod, you are not forced to.

I highly doubt people making 25 cents on the dollar will be able to afford the frivolous legal action required to do a takedown on a vaguely similar mod.  Like what Karbonite was to Kethane in KSP.  When the target is making no profit whatsoever.  You still have to pay the lawyer, even when there is no money to take.  If people are stupid enough to use this obviously disadvantageous steam workshop system to begin with. 

From what we've seen so far is that the people who did only did so because steam approached them before all the details were out, not the other way around.  SkyUI still has the current version for free, and the new version would not exist if it wasn't for the money offer.  And I don't think any free mod authors would be stupid enough to absolutely require the paid version.  Likely only other paid authors will.  That other dude (I think it was wet and cold? I just remember there was another)was completely against it after it was released and made obvious how bad of an idea it was.

Hate money all you want money is just about a requirement for life in the modern world.  Goodwill won't pay bills.  This is capitalism vs socialism, and there are legitimate reasons why people hate both.

Only in the sense that companies and individuals are profiting off of the ideas and work of others and are trying to censor opinions that go against their line.

Gabe Newell is apparently doing a short AMA on le Reddit to answer peoples' questions; mostly, he's been dodging questions and responding with the same "Support teh modders" platitudes.

As an internet mob signing petitions and harassing others, circlejerking so hard they've convinced themselves every tiny action on social media is an important part of their righteous battle, I think this movement would fit right in on Tumblr as-is. No change in strategy necessary.

Sometimes the world needs an internet mob to smack it around.

I'm not seeing how that is the case in this instance. I think it's beneficial that such a massive, confusing shitstorm has been stirred up that people are literally forced to take a step back ask "what the fuck happened?"
